Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

You are right. Sad but true.
Might be worth it just to check in with someone

They may tell you that it it needs is a $40 part that you can guy off of eBay/Amazon
This. I took it apart looking for a bulged/leaking cap or something burnt but couldn’t find any issues. If I can find someone local I’ll drop it off for a check. It’s a 70” decent tv that’s 2yrs old so if I can get it working for cheap I’ll do it. Hate throwing things out.

Check online on Kijiji or FB to see if someone is selling same or similar model.

Will give you that many more spare parts

Sunday repainted exterior metal railings and faded exterior lights . 20 yrs faded. It’s tedious work but when all the neighbours are painting rails and such , you don’t want to be the guy that stands out .

Started installing the D-rings and wheel chocks on the trailer. But kids went crazy so had to stop.

Hopefully will install the rest today.

Self drain? When the water is turned off, it stops. no drip drip drip.
Pipes aren't run in outside walls for the same reason.
I only use the rain head. Not much hair on my head though. Wife uses wall mount more as the water is under higher pressure. Better for rinsing hair.
its not best practice. but water stops at the valve when its shut not at the head so no real potential for a disaster.
insulate pipe, insulate attic, enjoy shower

Installing a 220 circuit in the garage for the new CUT 50. Table backorder toll sept, will have a little freehand experimentation till then.

Generator question: elderly family member has a generator (battery with electric start, manual choke) with dedicated hookup but she would like one that she can turn on from inside the house or that turns on automatically. Just to make things easier due to her age. Cheapest option the better as it is unlikely she will be in the house for much longer.

I’m not sure there is a “cheap” option on what your looking for , Generac seems to be the introductory level and I assume as good as anyones ? Replacement installed at bosses cottage was 8k ish . Wiring was in place , fuel supply was there , unbolt old , put in new , it self starts every two weeks and will start when required.

What is the current transfer switch situation? It wouldnt be that hard to spin up a solution to start the current generator from in the house (wire, relay, solenoid a switch, a button, a few brackets and a job box.

That would assume that there is some form of transfer switch. If you need to get in an electrician to add a transfer switch, this project will be well into four figures and maybe low five depending on chosen solution.

When talking about generators I think it is very important to clarify if it is a standby or emergency generator. You can go cheap for a standby but if someone's life is dependent on electricity it's a different matter.

City and rural have different needs.

City water isn't likely a problem but asking a senior to chop a hole in the ice and carry buckets up a slippery slope, getting slipperier every time they spill a bit is not a good idea.

Adding and removing heat.

Inside the home one needs to add heat in the winter and with climate change, air conditioning may be required in summer.

Some foods need to be cooked and some cooled so stoves and refrigeration are needed after a given number of hours. In the winter food can be kept cold by putting it outside if you don't have raccoons. Heating it is a different problem. Theoretically, in summer a black car without tinted windows can get to slow cooker temperatures but unless you have the digestive system of a vulture I don't recommend trying it.

Problems can be resolved with thought or money. It sucks to be dumb and poor.

Surprised it's that cheap. Inlaws replaced front door a few years before covid. Normal size single door and two sidelights was 12k iirc.

Somehow house doors shot waaaaay up a few years ago, well before COVID. I was going to do my front door with the same contractor who did my side entrance and they quote 3x more then previously, and everyone was in the same ballpark. Basically it's cheaper to install a garage door. Must be even more nuts now.

Picked up a steel front door from a manufacturer out in Vaughan a few weeks ago for a change room I'm going to build in the backyard... it was a display in his warehouse and an odd size with full length door window, side window and small transom, so almost impossible to sell, ended up getting it for under $900 tax in(will build around the door size).

He said during covid a lot of the smaller manufacturers closed down and he's ended up with most of their business. His lead times of 2 weeks have turned into 8-12 weeks with the extra business and parts shortages etc. And prices have gone through the roof, especially if your looking for non standard.

I ordered a window 3 weeks ago at Boncor (Westlake), in Hamilton.
On their front counter is a thick booklet with pics and descriptions of mis measured windows and doors for sale.........brand new......and low prices. I flipped through it, hoping to find one the size I need....no luck.......but, there were several doors systems with sidelights.
If you're not DIY, nevermind.

This one was in the $7000 range which was the cheapest pricing we could find in 2018 as it was a flip.

I replaced my front floors and transom, double 36×80 vinyl over steel with etched glass in the upper halfs. 72x30 arched transom lite. Did it myself, the custom set cost $1600 in 2010.

Time to renew again, the doors and window set are $4600 today from the same supplier.
