Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

I’ve got creaky steps and it’s driving me bananas. I was away and my dad made the call to do it himself instead of paying an extra $400 to get the stairs done proper.

Probably spent $1000 in material and time getting them ready only for them to creak.

How did you fix the creak @Hardwrkr13? Take the step off and just reinforce it?

As for awnings I’d love one over the back deck. After the noon hour it’s impossible to sit on the deck as it’s stupid hot. So we have to move to the gazebo.

We’ve considered both fabric and fixed fibreglass but $$$.
If you are looking for shade, I highly recommend coolaroo. The dappled shade is really nice. Rain (and some wind) passes through so there is no problem leaving it up all summer (snow would be bad for it).

You can buy packs of neodymium magnets fairly cheaply. They are great for finding screws. Since you have a pack of them you don't even need to mark the wall, just leave magnets stuck there until you have your anchors in and then remove magnets. I probably have 50 on my fridge (up high so kids don't puncture their intestines).
Where do you get them, do the usual places have them. I rather walk in and walk out in hand with something then order online for this type of item.

Amazon has them. Lee valley has them but is closed to walk in shopping (can probably preorder and pickup at store). I have no idea about normal stores.

Where did you get that? The usual places don't sell it (CT, HD, PA) Amazon has a listing but seems over priced.
I bought it from Amazon - it was more expensive than what it should have been and I wasn't sure if I could spend so much on a simple magnet in a rubber housing. I also had to wait a week for it, but I bought it with a couple other drywall tools I needed to make my garage demo go smoother and cleaner. After the demo, I also used it to hang everything in the garage, so in hindsight, it was worth every cent!

I picked up one of the Franklin stud finders from Canadian Tire. They work well. You can see the meat of the stud with them.

I had a short run of stairs that were a bit loose. A gallon of "kitty hair" (short strand) bondo pushed into all the corners where riser and run meet solved the problem. Had to hide it with some drywall cause you can imagine what it looked like but the stairs are rock solid.
I also used a fillet of bondo to fix my furnace fan. The squirrel cage was cracking around where the cage meets the shaft and getting loose. Worked mint.

image1.jpegSomeone (MP?) asked for a pic of bench and drawers. Look close and you can see how old (big) speakers boxes can be the basis of storage. I don't know why I have two pics?image1.jpeg

I once sold a neo magnet eight inches in diameter and an inch thick. 35 MGO strength. It was lethal. If you got your fingers between it and something it wanted to mate with you wouldn't have fingers left.

IIRC Sayal Electronics has them as well.

I'm kicking myself for not going over my stairs when we were doing the reno years ago. I could have glued and screwed everything before putting up the drywall underneath. No sneaking in late.

Ugh….looks like the spot where the water may be coming from….or 3…in behind the drywall.

I would be tempted to use a hole saw to remove a plug of drywall. Shove it back in if there are no meaningful results.

A rectangle is just as easy to patch and gives you more room to work. He likely needs to push some insulation out of the way to see the concrete.
