Embridge Workers Scam

So I live at near Lawrence Ave W. and Caledonia Rd area.
2 guys come knocking on my door and proceed down. They are letting people away that the rates have been dropped down. They are in clothes that an average citizen would wear that are sweatshirts and sweat pants running shoes. They hold an iPad with a picture on the home screen.
Forsure this is a scam because why the hell would they put a picture on the homescreen. They ask if I go upstairs to check if I got any bills to show them so they can see about the changes Embridge has made. I said I was not comfortable going in and looking for bills in my dads room. They said this is their 3rd time coming around. I said come back next time, then they said they aren't sure they're in the area. So I said you guys can leave.

I should've asked for their names and reported this. I believe what they're trying to do is when you go upstairs, they can steal any small things or break in next time to see what you have in the house. Make sure you guys never open the door fully for them to look in.
 
I'm not quite understanding - what is it exactly that they were asking for?

Either way, AFAIK *real* utility employees don't knock on your door and demand to come inside, especially to look at your bills. Two guys with an iPad? They could have been anyone. Hell, they could be scoping out your place for a potential B&E, who knows. At the very least, there are plenty of guys who convince homeowners into a water heater rental or water softener contract.

Bottom line - never let strangers into your home, no matter what badge/employee card they're holding. If Enbridge or whomever needs to get a hold of you, they'll call or send a letter.
 
That's exactly what I'm saying. They didn't go in or ask, they asked for me to go get them bills so they can see it. Which is so suspicious.

They claimed Embridge was making changes in the bill and see if my household has been changed. Idiots..

sounds like they are re-sellers of gas or hydro or who knows,they get your bill and next thing you are sighned up with there company,I grabbed a bill i had and blacked out all my info and asked where they could save me money,lmao ,they left with there tail tucked between there legs.

Happened to dear ol' mum.. They claimed they were with Enbridge as I found out later on. Gonna have to see what sort of early bailout penalties they have once I upgrade her boiler and water heater. Might have to pay for the rental, but at least she'll save more on energy lol

That's exactly what they are. Anybody who wants to come in and look at your bills should be told to f-off and don't come back. Switching utilities should involve you sitting down and doing your homework. Not dealing with door to door scammers.

The scam is still going on because obviously it works. You have new homeowners who are naive and seniors who are trusting who are falling for this kind of thing. Homeowners need to be vigilant and have the attitude that NO ONE enters their home unless it's the police with a valid search warrant. Beyond that, your home is your castle.
 
DirectEnergy, National Home Services, etc etc.

They try appear official like, some more than other, but they're nothing but shady salesman. Google it and you'll see pages upon pages of headaches.
 
All Enbridge employees and contractors have Enbridge id's. We will never ask to see your gas bill, as Enbridge is a distribution company, not a marketer. If this happens to anyone else ask them to wait, and call Enbridge.

lol! No I didn't let anyone in, I never let anyone in.
But these guys claimed Embridge is dropping rates down for you (me) that I'm currently saving money. They wanted to see the bill(s) if it has changed.

These guys had no company vehicle or anything, just walked door to door.

Anyways, I reported them to fraud services with the area and time that has happened.

How does the ID look like? I managed to get a quick glimse when I asked to see their ID.. It had nothing to do with Embridge though.

That's not entirely true, we well come unannounced sometimes, depending on the situation. We get lots of damaged Mains by other contractors and if we lose an area, we will knock on all doors to make safe. We will also show up unannounced for other reasons.

How does the ID look like? I managed to get a quick glimse when I asked to see their ID.. It had nothing to do with Embridge though.

At the top it will have Enbridge logo, and say Enbridge,then it will have a picture of the tech, below the pic will be the techs name. Because I'm a sub contractor for Enbridge, mine says authorized contractor above my pic and has the company name below the pic. Enbridge has one contractor for above ground work, ie meters and regulators, that is lakeside gas.

I take it you work for one of these companies, so that's good to know. I was only quoting AFAIK.

Maybe there should be more media info out there in terms of what situations to realistically and legitimately expect you guys in....i.e. there are many homeowners out there who don't know the difference.

If someone is unsure, they can ask for a supervisors number. Usually we will have an order from Enbridge, and the tech should show it to the customer.

I would like to see that from a GoPro. Those losers are starting to drive me nuts.
I have a sign taped to my door "No solicitors, agents & peddlers", I haven't had anyone yet for 2mths.

I hate to burst your bubble, but i have the right,24/7 to access our meter, if you refused and were a jerk,i would turn off the gas, do my work, leave you a call card, and when you were cold or wanted hot water, you could call in and wait up to 4 hrs for a tech to come and turn it on lmfao, done it many times, on top of that, when a meter is turned back on, we have to inspect all appliances, and believe me, when people are rude,we can and will find an infraction resulting in the gas being turned of until it's fixed at your expense, so next time a tech comes to your door to work on or meter or regulator, be nice. The part I hate most about my job is having to A tag customers in the middle of winter, leaving their gas off, the part I like most about my job is, issuing an A tag to a customer that is a jerk leaving their gas off in the middle of winter lmao.
