Ducati 749/848 Or Honda CBR 600RR OR Suzuki GSX-R 600/750

+1 on duc 848s, its also chick magnet x10 (in red or white) than my kawi

You say Duc's arent high maintanence and then go on to prove that they are. The Jap bikes valves will still be good at 19000k and definetly dont need a timing chain every 2 years if ever.

I have nothing against Ducati, they are really nice bikes. But dont try and sugar coat the maintanence compared to Jap bikes.

OP, just get whatever bike you like the best and sit on all of them because some might not fit you as good as others.

19000km is alot different then 7500km as original poster stated. and it's belts not timing chain
not sure how you believe I'am sugar coating., I have spent as much and more on certain Jap bikes as a Duc
speaking from experience .

Valves on my Duc were good and didn't need adjustment at 13000 and next time they need to be checked is 24 000.

So, Jap bikes cheaper to maintain my ***.

Old Ducatis are higher maintenance than new ones (848, 1098-1198, etc)

An 848's valves will still be fine at 19,000km too.

the ducati is gorgeous. but i hate the dry clutch.

also take a look at triumph daytona 675. contrary to popular belief, there is no high maintainance costs on those, costed me the same as any other bike i've owned.

and htey look hawt.

I'm curious as to when Japanese bikes became domestic?

848 has a wet clutch

All you Ducati lovers dont have to get so defensive, Im not bashing your bikes. I like Ducati's as well, and yes they have got alot better in the mainanence department compared to older Duc's.
The fact is they still have some things that need to be maintaned sooner than Jap bikes. What you gain in performance you lose in maintanance.
Timing belts break alot easier than timing chains which is why they have to replaced periodically, if not the top end would eat itself. But the belt is lighter and less rotating mass. Its give and take, you Duc guys cant have awesome bikes and better maintanence. That would just be depressing for us regular Joes.

truth be told I had my eye on the 749, I saw a used one for sale with only 9000k's on going for 8 g's I'm not sure if that's a lot to pay for a bike that's 8 years old already. I'm going to ask the Duc owners that question. For the same money I could get a brand New GSX-R or CBR I've sat on all 3 bikes and I like them all. I have several friends who have Ducati's (996's, 1098's,848's) that you can't ride it easy, it needs to be ridden hard because it won't feel good just "cruising" on it. Well, my intentions aren't to pull a MOTO gp on the streets, my intentions are to ride normally, and on occasion open up the bike wherever possible on an open country road/highway.

buy my bike!
end of discussion, close thread
as stated before, do you want a motorcycle or a premium motorcycle?
848 addresses all of the shortcomings of the 749 and can outperform a current 600

The 749 is a neat looking bike for sure--congrats if that's the way you go.

I can't make any claims about a Ducati motor's flexibility, but most Japanese bikes have motors that can handle different riding situations, (-but you don't want to lug them around at 3000rpms, either). You're in an enviable position....

There's another bike, not on your list, that is a great street sport bike. Its the crossplane R1---it is plenty fast, handles really well, and has a motor with a lot of character, (sounds like a V4 but better ... if that makes sense). You could buy one in the states for 10500, taxes in, (new noncurrent 2010 model). That's not much more cash than the 8'gs you're willing to spend on an 8 year old Duc....

I have a JAP and a DUC. Let me tell you the JAP(Jewish American Princess) costs a lot more to maintain than the Duc. Haha. Just get whatever revs your engine.

Nonsense man, you can "cruise" around on a 749 just fine. Its better than any 600 for street use. However, it's less comfortable.. The ergonomics are more aggressive IMO and the long tank means a longer reach to the bars.

You really have to find one to sit on. Phone up GP Bikes i think they have a 999 you can sample. They also have a lot of other bikes youd be able to compare against.

I think that any "newer" sportsbike will be much better in the maintenance category than an older bike (ie. 8 year old Duc 749)....keeping that in mind, both new Duc's and Jap bikes will also have their issues. Before getting my 848 EVO, I came from an '06 GSXR 750 and those bikes were/are awesome except for their Regulator/Rectifier issues. Apparently the 848's have an issue with an expanding gas tank due to the materials it's made of.

In the end, get the most recent/comfortable bike that you can afford. Looking at the list of bike's you're looking at, it seems like you can't really go wrong with any of them.

Good luck.

The expanding gas tanks are made by a third party and they react to ethanol. KTM uses them too, and possibly other manufacturers.

Its best to seek out ethanol-free gas but Im not sure if any stations carry it any more. I think Shell did but not so sure any more.
