Driving a car in bare feet

try driving a standard with high heels on... my clutch goes so far down that my heel ends up digging into the bottom of my car and there is actually a hole right through my driver mat where my heel digs in when I'm shifting gears.

I drive barefoot all the time, other than work vehicles.

I have much better control of the brake and clutch pedals in bare feet. I can grip the pedal with my toes and there is no way my foot will slip. This is not true with footwear. Also, if you notice footwear designed for driving is extremely thin. I believe it's far far more dangerous to be wearing crappy footwear, like high heels or workboots or winter boots, than barefoot.

And no, it is certainly not illegal.

You may hear from some cops that if you are driving barefoot and you get in an accident they'll charge you with careless. But they can charge you with anything so I wouldn't let that worry you.

Agree. This is a load of ********. this is the same as the idea that its not illegal to wear a hat while driving but if you cover your face with it and crash its careless. The same way wearing clown shoes that stop you from hitting the pedals properly can result in a careless charge.

It's not about tactile feedback. It's about the sole making your foot stiffer, so when you apply force on the pedal, less gets wasted on bending your foot up (Newton's 3rd) and more goes directly on the pedal.

If you look at a pair of proper racing shoes you will see that it is very much about tactile feedback. More feel enables more precise inputs. The force you mention being "wasted" in bending the foot up is actually an important part of the feedback loop.

Newton didn't drive, by the way, and you most certainly can heel-toe barefoot.

Dont feel comfy driving barefoot.

Flip flops though id say are a 50% occurence during summertime.

try driving with ballet slippers...

That's assuming the controls on a race car are the same as the controls on a passenger vehicle that is designed to be operated by shoe-clad people. You think their ergonomic designers didn't factor that in?

So you're saying that the engineers assigned to pedal ergos intentionally designed the pedals to be operated only by drivers wearing thick, hard-soled shoes? Seriously?
I'm beginning to think you are arguing for argument's sake.

I like your illustrations. Made me laugh.

That also made me laugh. I find it far easier to heel-toe barefoot as my toes have a far better feel of the gas pedal and don't slip off so easily. Though I must admit I suck at heel-toe use barefoot or not.

Isn't that the whole purpose of the inteweb?

knowing what i have walked on/through/in in this grimey city and then gotten in my car and put that on the pedals is enough to not make me ever drive barefoot, feels gross.

It is easier and more comfortable to use your heel (in a shoe) as a pivot. The additional length from the stiff tip of the shoe opposed to the balls of your feet give you more precise throttle control.

and driving barefoot is just gross. Girls are exempted if they are wearing heels.

??? I am not eating with the bottoms of my feet so who cares? And anyways, if you smelled my feet after a day of being in shoes you would want to eat off the bottom of the shoe. ;)

Love driving barefoot.

I see in some states it's illegal to ride your motorcycle in bare feet! Is there a similar law here??

Driving in heels isn't really any different than regular shoes imo. I find driving bare foot very awkward and less safe. It is hard to get an even amount of pressure on the pedal and I feel like I am only using certain toes to push with.

WTF are you talking about??? You're driving a car, not lifting cranes with your feet.

Wanna have best of both worlds while driving your car?

Mega-comfortable

I got a pair and it's not even close to the same feeling. I was hoping it would be, but it's not. I started driving my jeep in bare feet and now I drive everything, I'll hate it when I have to stop wearing flip flops.
