Driving a car in bare feet

Nope if you have a foot-shaped pedal and a cup or plastic bottle for your chewing tobacco  No, it's not against the law, but it's a bad practice.

I sure hope not I do all the time from spring to fall.

No, it's not against the law, but it's a bad practice.

Why is it bad practice? You have better feel and control barefoot than in thick soled footwear. In fact, some performance driving instructors will recommend driving barefoot.

Riding a motorcycle barefoot, however, would most definitely be bad practice. ;)

My driving instructor once told me not to incase you had to slam on the brakes, and there was something sharp lodged into the pedal.

I heard that it was against the law to do in flip flops... not sure.

I think its about preference. I'm from Brazil, where its warm (and drivers are a lot better than Ontario). I can tell you that no one goes to the beach in shoes (its considered weird) , and everyone drives bare foot or with sandals/flip flops. But again... most people there are used to walking around bare foot or with sandals most part of their lives.

The Barefoot FAQ
[h=2]Q18: Is it legal to drive barefoot?[/h] YES!!! (At least in the United States, Canada, and England; I don't know about other countries.) The statement to the contrary is urban folklore and believed by so many people, even some police officers. However, if you call either your local or state police and ask them, they will say it's legal. If the cop on the phone says otherwise, ask him/her to give you the statute number. S/he won't be able to and then will admit their mistake.
One guy actually did write to all 50 states asking the question. All the letters he received back are available via:
Additionally, the <cite>American Automobile Association</cite> (AAA) publishes a "<cite>Digest of Motor Laws</cite>" handbook that is a:
<cite> Summary of laws and regulations governing regulation and operation of passenger cars in the United States, its Territories, and the Provinces of Canada. </cite>
It has a "Barefoot Driving" entry for all states and territories; and for each it says: "Operation of a motor vehicle by a driver with bare feet is permitted."
The 62nd edition has ISBN 0-916748-70-7. You can obtain a copy of the digest through your local AAA club. When I called my local AAA club, they were clueless about the fact thay they sell it. Be persistent. If all else fails, you can contact:

Fact or Myth: Is it illegal to drive barefoot?

Not surprisingly, there are a lot of myths drivers might believe when riding around the greater Toronto area. We approached Toronto's finest, Toronto Police Services, to demystify the most common driving myths - and they even provided us with some interesting stats on driving offenses that have occurred by the thousands in the great city of Toronto.

A cop friend actually recommended it to fight drowsiness until a person could safely find a rest spot.

Because you get much better control wearing shoes as the soles give you a bit of stiffness and leverage. Of course, there are limits to that.. Skate shoes are much more comfortable for driving than work boots. Something a little thinner than skate shoes is probably optimal for your typical passenger vehicle.

Could you explain how lack of tactile feedback will equate to 'much better control'?

I found that driving barefoot gave me less control. Because you don't always hit your foot on the petal in the exact same place, I found that I'd have to compensate slightly. Whereas in any shoes you just press down and the shoe hits the petal in the same place.

It's not about tactile feedback. It's about the sole making your foot stiffer, so when you apply force on the pedal, less gets wasted on bending your foot up (Newton's 3rd) and more goes directly on the pedal.

If driving barefoot = better control, the pros would do it.

I never felt that driving barefoot was better control.

One of the reasons being the inconsistent friction.

Fire retardant footwear is required in any race series, otherwise maybe they would.

Possibly, but they aren't driving passenger vehicles either. The controls are crazy-sensitive on race cars. Even with that, they'd need to be made even more sensitive to exert less reactive force on the foot.
