Dreaming - Lottery Win - What would you do ?

I'd likely quit my job and have an outstanding year or two of debauchery filled with coke and whores and destroying expensive vehicles... and a year later I'd be divorced and begging for my job back because I'd be broke.
 
I'm evil so winning big money wouldn't be a good thing for others.

I wouldn't pay off relative's debts but I'd pay for them to take courses that would enable them to be better off.

I would support the arts by purchasing artwork that I liked but I wouldn't give a nickel to a deadbeat that thought he/she was talented and needed a grant.

I would fund scholarships to courses I felt were important. I'm a control freak so your Phd in tattoo art is on your own dime.

I would harass politicians over their promises like a back alley collection agency goes after money. Their constituents would get daily updates on their failures and squanderings.

50 million would just get me started on being legally nasty.

And i agree, most charities snatch most of your donation and very little gets to the needy. What i meant by donation wasnt straight up giving them the money but more like you said, id try to build a bit of an infrastructure in needy places. Maybe schools in poverty ridden areas or a water filteration system in places that theres water shortage or micro loans... teach them how to fish rather than giving them a boatload.
 
I gave this some more thought especially in regards to handing money to family and friends. I think this is the diciest area because no matter what you give it might not be enough unless it was some crazy big amount that you're a fool. I'd ask each what they thought was a fair amount that they wouldn't come back for more. Once all the amount requests are tallied, and it's workable, I'd give each double what they asked and have contracts written up. And that would be the end of giving to family and friends.
 
I wouldn't be handing any cash to friends, any friends that hinted beyond teasing about getting cash would be unfriended. I suspect I would not loose a single friend because I'm already careful about who I consider friends.
But I would treat my friends to some pretty epic vacation fun, some desert Baja riding, maybe chartering a sailboat in the Med for a few days, dinner in Spain.
My kids would not be allowed to become entitled doosshes, they would have a trust fund paying them a nice top up but they would need to save up to have a Ferarri.

Government in Canada does not touch lottery winnings. They can tax any money made off the lottery win but not the win itself. E.g. you win $50 million and you put it all in the bank @ 1% (ludicrous LOL) but 1% = $500k. This 500k can be taxed as part of your capital gains tax. Taxing capital gains means that 50% of the amount (in this case 250k) is taxable and 250k is non-taxable. so If the 250k is fully taxed at say max rate of what 48% ? then you'd have to pay 120k in taxes on your 500k interest.

Having said that you have to pay taxes on USA lottery wins ... but you can file a tax return and if you can identify net losses on gambling in the USA you can get some of that money back ... I believe you file a 1040NR if I remember right (I believe this is what I filed these when living down there).

Are you teasing me? If I win $50million I'll invite you and the other outer circle peeps to epic Baja vacation where we can eat ice cream to the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean. You'll pardon me when the sugar rush induces me to go on and on about how fortunate you are to be one of my friends, category 2, and sadly no cash payout until further review of faint hope clause. Did I mention how I won $50million? You'll be hearing a lot about that until you're unfriended.
 
Anyone asking for $$ will get none.

Otherwise, $$ set aside for the kids to get when they are 25 and the rest I spend on me and some to close friends.
 
Buy a peice of land, build a small race track the size of tmp or grand bend (road course only), build a house there with a nice shop and parking garage.

you've mentioned you dont drink, joe doesn't drink, your both a huge health insurance liability. I will need my charming missus to arrange private nurses to look after your sorry arses. And there shall be no ice cream . The rest of us will drink stupid amounts of local hooch, you'll need to keep us out of double dutch.
The Baja ride will be on Maico, Jawa, some Huskvarna and perhaps a couple Geeves for someone that needs a mainstream ride.
