There are tons of jobs that pay you to do nothing!

They're called civil servants...
Now that I think of it, was office space about your generation?

My wife is Milton. Her contract expired many months ago. They told her to keep coming to work so she does. Thankfully they are still paying her.
hope she doesnt burn the hospital down

Us civil servants are useless until your house is on fire or someone is having a heart attack...

What if you just need a new license sticker? Or have a question about why your income tax refund has been delayed for 3 years?

Frak....if I new gov't job would be this hard and difficult, I would've stayed in consulting.

I've said it before on here, I'm working my ass off here for the gov't. Not sure what the rest of the folks are doing to have it so easy.

I actually told my manager jokingly today, 'if you expect me to pull 9-10 hour days and weekends for free, just give me a heads up before you fire me as it ain't happening. You guys can work all weekend for all I care, I'm not having it.'

His response shocked me: 'You're the smart one, don't do what I'm doing.'

And if that means that I'll never move up from my role now, well I guess it's time to look for a new job in a year or so.

As with many business, different silos or departments function differently. Some work hard, some do as little as possible. Unlike the corporate world, public sector slacking departments are allowed to continue unchanged. In the private sector, it may happen for a while, but once someone powerful figures out that a group is not working in the best interests of the whole, things change fast and hard.

In some cases but politicians have taken it to an art form with pensions and perks.
was gonna say, even the laziest civil servant processes oxygen and metabolizes CO2, thats a job

Politicians on the other hand...

Just wanna add to this...

Work as a software developer at a technically incompetent company.

First year was hell. Last 5 years I've been making $100-$300 an hour because people don't know how to do their jobs and I'll play games while waiting for them; end up working 2~ hours a day for real on average lol

This is versus "real work" (school, and FAANGs) where most guys at the top were pulling 6-10 hours of brain wrecking focus 4-6 days a week.

Anyone know how much male gigolos make btw? lol One of my previous financial advisors told me he was a male stripper.....apparently they make a decent amount to just look good and slap their wang on women!

Having worked with (not for) mega-corps on the telecommunications side and similar, I can tell you categorically that this is not true. Any organization over a certain size becomes bureaucratic by necessity, which then affords endless opportunities for people to hide. Delay, obfuscation and avoiding dealing with problems for fear of making what is perceived to be the wrong call are common. From speaking with others who've worked at or with huge outfits like Microsoft, my experience is not unique.

Working with governmental agencies, on the other hand, has been broadly straightforward, though some are better than others. There can be issues (we had one woman who went home because her desk had been moved about an inch and a half from where it used to be), but the managers have generally been well-intentioned and competent. It's not universal (I believe there was a report released recently about city arborists somewhere only working four hours a day), but no less than it is universal the other way.

I had the same pre-conceived notions going in that 'government = waste' and 'private = efficient'. Believe me, I've been disabused of that concept many times since...

My dad was a senior visa officer with Foreign Affairs for over 36 years. Anyone whose elected obviously doesn’t have a clue, they ignore most advice given from career civil servants and then blame them when it’s upside down.

Sounds like you, too, have filled out your share of TPS reports.
