Downtown bike parking “fun”

Been feeling sad and down since my parked bike was run down by a truck downtown on Thursday.
Just shy of 10 years and 152,000km, only owner. FZ6

Thankfully the cop on construction duty made sure the driver doesn’t do a runner.
The bike still works, rode to collision centre, but the kickstand is broken too.

To get a head start (assuming it’s a write off), or something to look forward to, what bike should I consider next?? I don’t want anything new anymore because of city parking. FZ1 was something of interest. I don’t do tours at the moment, but I like the sport touring option. Plus Givi bags will need to be an option for that model.

Wow that sucks.
1st gen FZ1 (2001-2005) is carbed and 2006 onward is FI. The older models have a larger gas tank with slightly longer range. I really like my 1st gen. You can get racks to mount Givi bags with both models, and if buying used, many owners have already added the racks and may include cases too.

What's your budget?

That's a total bummer. No idea about bike options, maybe a used st1100. Otherwise good luck!

Depends what the insurance will give me. Around $10K for the “new” bike.
FI would be better for me, so will narrow to those years. I’m guessing the FZ1 is a solid bike overall??

If getting a newer FZ1, then get one that is 2009 and up. They are solid bikes and will have boatloads more power than your last bike. No problem finding one well under $10k which you can have some coin left to get aftermarket stuff you want.

If you are on Facebook there are a couple good FZ1 groups on there:

I will say that the carb'd 1st gen bikes have a really nice fuel delivery and throttle response, which I find perfect for inner city, slow speed riding, but also good for long distance and twisty road riding. I was a bit hesitant to go back to a carb'd bike as my daily rider after many years away, but it's been a great experience with zero issues.

Insurance should be around $1k/year or so, depending on where you live and your driving record. I pay $1k/yr with a fair bit of additional coverage topped up.

So you never had yo clean carbs yet??

My bike is $1200 a year now, and my record was clean until this year ( this accident, plus speeding of 10 which is back logged) , my area isn’t too overpriced for Toronto, yet.

I’m liking this 2006 model in Montreal, we even use same Michelin tires, but no luggage racks.
63K is a baby 😆

Maybe I need to buy and deal with insurance claim same time.

Parked bike run over with a cop witness is not at fault and won't affect your rates.

The 2006 models and poossibly up to 2008 had some bikes (not all) with issues around cracks at the frame welds. It was an issue fixed with models starting in either 2008 or 2009. You can get a 2008+ FZ1 with similar or less mileage for a similar price than that 2006 bike in Montreal. Here's a few examples:

2009, 38k, $5800obo

2008, 62k, $4200

Also consider the FJ-09 - it might be a good match for you:
2016, 18k, $7k

The previous owner of my bike did the carbs before I bought it and they have been perfect over the last 35k. I'll plan to do them every 50-60k or so, only if needed.

Thanks for your feedback on these bikes! I was looking at that 2009 bike as well.
The front tire size is same as fz6, and rear is almost same too. Might be able to swap to my newer tires.

I should probably go see some of the other models in stores soon before committing to specific bike. To make sure I like the sitting position and such.

Make sure you check the titles on Quebec bikes. Different laws from Ontario.

claims can be though down the road; one of the first things you`re asked when you change companies; 'how many claims have you made in the last (x) number of years" never seen it worded as 'at fault claims'.

I would answer zero at-fault claims. If they ask again, I'd volunteer one not-at-fault. Depending on training of person on the other end of the phone, they may not notice (or maybe the question really is at-fault claims but they play dumb and include all claims in that box to drive profit).

When I was getting quotes from other insurers, I had to answer this as part of their overall new customer questionnaire. They said not-at-fault claims wouldn't count against me. But then again, maybe they weren't telling the truth. I don't have any not-at-faults within their timeframe, so hard to tell.

… so perhaps I should buy and lock in a rate for another motorcycle before this claim gets registered????

I thought about a court instead of insurance, but it would be more complicated and tedious, and lengthy.

I haven’t heard anything from insurance, with Echelon, since reporting on Friday.

Pretty sure that court is not an option I believe Ontario insurance is the only path except in very exceptional cases.
