What do you know about the ring of fire?

My personal perspective: They say that they will be building batteries in 2025. You often can't build a house in Ontario in 2 yrs. Who's going to staff this mining operation hours North of any roads or small towns in Ontario? We can't find workers in Peterborough. Not to mention the time needed for first nations issues and any court challenges from environmentalists (and Steven G)

The EV fad will be over just in time for us to finish the highway to the ring of fire.

I would be shocked if anything useful happened by 2025. Ring of fire roads have been political hot potato for more than a decade with first nations (most of the issues seem to be around who pays/profits more than protection of the sacred land).

Pillaging the natural environment for resource extraction has always been profitable in the short term. EV's aren't a fad. Battery chemistry may change over time but humans will use more batteries every year for the foreseeable future.

I might be wrong, but to my understanding the paperwork is complete with the roads.

As far as workers, yeah they have a shortage of skilled people.

It would be a remote fly in fly out for employees

What do you know about the ring of fire?
The "Ring of Fire" is a ring shaped mineral deposit in NE of Thunder Bay. It's rich in the same minerals you find in the 200 miles surrounding Timmins - gold, nickel, chromite, nickel, copper, and platinum. It's the most significant mineral discovery in Ontario in the last 100 years. It's a

It's only accessible by air and by ice road from Pickle Lake for about 10 weeks a year. The Ontario gov't wants to make the ice road a permanent all-season road.

Building a road isn't easy. There are big engineering, construction, financing, and Federal political challenges. Also have to deal with entitled SIGs who have already lined up, hat in hand.

It's not a shortage of workers that's the issue in Peterborough, it's the shortage of pay that's sufficient to entice people.

My last job before this was a FIFO job, 200k / year (with 1 month off unpaid) and we had people clambering for positions to go there.

This Ring of Fire project (if it ever sees the light of day) will have similar salaries, if not more. There's work out in the Tundra in Nunavut, Baffin Island, and NWT and they're all paying 200-300k/year for professionals to go on rotation.

Once my kids get older, and I am not as needed for their upbringing I'll be calling all my contacts to get back into that business. Stupid money, lots of time off, and sure you miss out on some family time but once the kids are old enough to be 'self sufficient'...might be a good time for it.

EV sales have already plateaued. Either way I don't see Canada or the US being able to compete with Asia due to costs and regulations. The company I work for is ready to pull the plug on a $35m battery assembly facility due to commercial viability. Ford (cars) just paused work on a battery plant until they know the viability, though that may be a bluff for the union.

When my cousin retired as a front end loader operator in the NWT diamond mines he was making $150 K per year FIFO two in and two out. He could have picked a side gig when home if he wanted as he was also a welder and lineman. $20 an hour jobs are everywhere. The three grand you take home pays for an apartment and TTC fares. Incentive to work????

Good, maybe the pricing of these things will come down to earth. As it stands....60-80k for a Hyundai and a 1+ year wait.

No thanks.

A friend was on an out of town supervision project and his kids were early teens. They needed an extra set of reins and it showed.

Wanna explain that to someone that's ESL? I have no clue what this sentence means.

The political wrangling will be a big challenge. Mining's best friend, Stephan Guilbeault, is also at the table.

One of Canada's big assets is mineral resources. We have lots of them, they are a in demand and a good place to shift investments and jobs as we transition away from oil and gas.

The kids needed a dad as well. I grew up without a father figure and I understand.

It's worse today with commercial brain washing, conspiracy theories, YOLO, gender BS, hormones, fake it until you make it, etc.

There is a trillion dollar economy trying to squeeze every drop of profit out of your family. Having a second parent right there doubles the chance of them surviving the onslaught.

I knew a guy that worked the DEW line when a year would put you into a house in Toronto with 50% down. Now it's five years or more for 50% down.

I wonder if the survival of this thread indicates any kind of political bias?

If the title was Little Potato, or Justinder wouldn't it have been parked in Trash Talk ?

I distrust ALL politicians - especially stupid ones, and Dougie is setting a pretty low bar.
Apparently, DOFO and the other conservative Premiers are partially to blame for JUTU's drop in popularity now:

Edit: I'm not sure if the interviewer is new or naive, she asks the tough questions, but then let's the interviewees redirect them, without her interrupting and putting them back on track.

Did Doug actually sell out our waterfront legacy at Ontario Place to the company that bought his decal biz? Is this true ???

Dig deep and you'll find Kevin Bacon is also connected to this deal.

Waiting to see who gets the nod for the London and Vaughan developments, and whether there'll be an investigation.
