Do you charge family $$

It depends on if it takes my time away from a real job. If it doesn't, then no.

I don't believe in karma.

Roofing is kinda different though... in my family, you can always get enough people to finish your roof on a Saturday if you put out a general call. Of course you're going to feed them, but nobody would dream of asking for money for that - they'll get their own turn eventually

My dad is handy in just about every trade and does everything on his own (I don't think i've ever seen a repair man at our house) and does a good job. He has been fixing the neighbors furnaces and pool heaters and whatever else goes wrong for as long as I can remember. Only until recently, he has smartened up and realized the neighbor will call a tradesperson over and pay the $200 service call or whatever it costs...and he was expected to do it for free all those years or bought a case of sausages (true story when he hooked up a gas barbeque) Well no more will he run over on a saturday morning for nothing. Family is one thing but don't give away any services for free these days!

One problem in working for free is the chance of something going wrong. A can of paint gets spilled on the carpet etc. Do they expect you to make it good? If you're getting paid there's a little in your pocket to cover these things.

I helped a friend with a U-shaped kitchen counter top and I was the guy making the drawing. When the counter top came in it didn't fit and he was giving me the stink-eye. It turned out the manufacturer missed on the width so not my fault and the manufacturer came good for it.

I helped buddy move big satellite dish while wearing knee brace for torn ACL, made woopsy, damaged dish. Later he tagged along to pick up 5/16 x 3'x7' steel sheet for welding table, got to my house, he jumped in his truck and effed off. I guess I deserved that.

Lately it seems like every time I've heard a story involving a cut-to-order door, window glass, or counter top, the manufacturer goofs on the first pass 100% of the time no matter how thoroughly and specifically the dimensions were provided

Yes, this is especially frustrating when setting the item aside because not ready to install. Check as soon as you receive. I've had 3 custom wheels built with wrong dish and one with wrong rim width. Unbelievable.

I was working on a little side project last week, the lady counted the existing floor tile to get sq footage, then converted that to the bigger size as the new ceramic was 18x18. Except the old tile was not 12x12, it was metric 13.5" so I was two tile short on a special order tile.
When I asked her to measure the gap for the new mirror , it was 36 1/2 and two marks on her tape measure. How about 36 5/8 says me? Yes that may be it says her.
She is a school teacher.

I did a job listing 3 hours and 45 minutes labour and sending an invoice for 3.75 hours. The babe doing the paperwork said I was overcharging them 30 minutes.

Never mix family and business unless you want to risk the potential for bad "blood". This applies mostly to anyone who has a propensity to complain about a job not done well.

Think about that awkward moment when your work/favour is being questioned.

Buddy took his KZ1000J to Brutune (time warp) to double check my clutch install because it didn't "feel right". It was fine but no worky on his bike no more.

Sadly, probably not. "Buddy" was/is the hanger on hail fellow well met sort. On another note, have a new buddy at work needs me too lower his KLR650. He should have thought about that before messing me up on an earlier job. Another swing and a miss. Or karma.

It's reasons like this that can build resentment and bad blood between family and friends and should be the answer to the question of the OP. I still believe you shouldn't do business with family or friends for that reason.

Simply assess how much you're willing to do for someone as a favor and know how to handle any criticism you may get from your help. As they say...

No good deed, goes unpunished.

Kharma is a *&^%$!!!
