Dispelling the japanese dealer network myth

Let's see, over the years I've owned a 1966 Ducati 250 Monza, a Montesa Cota, a BSA 441 Victor Special, a 1972 Norton Commando Combat.
I stopped riding Euro during the collapse of the mid 1970s - no dealers, no parts, no support.
Japanese bikes to numerous to mention starting with a 1966 Suzuki 80, up to the last couple - a KLR650 Kawasaki and a 1981 Yamaha XV920RH.
Likely somewhere between 70-80 different rides over the years, mostly Japanese.
Now I have a machine designed in England, built in India, that I can service myself and get any part I need in 7-10 working days.
Anything more you'd like to know about me - my favourite colour or flavour ice cream ?

There was a gent that used to go by the name "Chowdah Ridah" on this forum. I remember seeing an XV 920 in his garage. It was being restored.
Perhaps he can chime in (if he is still here) on his review of that bike.
 
I got it 90% restored then sold it to a guy from Quebec who gave me stupid money for it.
It was a truck, but fun to go leisurely 'putting about' on.
He is an authority on them apparently. He puts XV1000 guts in them, including the last generation starter motor stuff, hot cams, manual cam chain tensioners, punches them out to 1100cc and ditches the Hitachi carbs. My intention was to build something like the Bob Work bike that David Aldana rode but mine was in too good shape to chop up.

My intention was to build something like the Bob Work bike that David Aldana rode but mine was in too good shape to chop up.

@bigpoppa why did you already need a new lever? Isn’t your bike brand new?
dropped it in the summer time, needed new lever and handguard(they're made of jello), was under the impression it would be readily available at any honda dealer 🤷‍♂️ but nope
 
Years ago (1975) I low sided my Yamaha XS500 and damaged the right side case. Had the new bike 4 weeks when this happened and then had to wait 6 weeks for the new part. Then dealer tells me they did not order oil seals for the case and it would be another 4 weeks. Not happy......... They gave me the spec off of their parts fiche and I sourced them elsewhere to get the bike back on the road.

If you want the spec often the online parts fiche will provide them for seals, o rings etc....... Below is the description for an ST1100 oil seal, its spec and the Honda part number.

10 or 15 years ago the XV920R was the hot ticket in endurance racing in OZ. CMR built a bunch of frames... but there was NO motors, the price for an "R" went through the roof.
I got enlisted to see if it was "practical" to modify a shaft drive to chain drive. We built a couple of motors, but there was like 100hrs of welding and machining... so about $10,000.
NOPE.

Six weeks is pretty poor but i dented the front rim on my not quite a week old CB1100F and the rim was still on back order when i took delivery of a FJ1100 the next spring.
FWIW the US model had cast wheels while the Canada version had stamped wheels so the NA supply of the Canada version was thin.

Poor diddums had to wait a week from Honda for a brake lever and didn't get any sympathy. Now he's feeling butt hurt.
When expectations don't align with reality, one should reevaluate their own expectations.

The Royal Enfield bit did make me chuckle though :p I'll give you a shout in the spring time maybe we meet up and change my mind about them

I also always had this thought that buying a Jap bike would suddenly create this safety cussion around me and I could just wreck my bike anywhere and BAM instant repairs... Obviously I hadn't really thought it through.. I ordered a centre stand for my bike took a week. Something you would think might be lying around. Nope.

Maybe I should just buy a Ducati and not give a crap if I have to store it while waiting for parts. If you have to wait no matter what...
