Define success

Why do people feel the need to come into forums and talk about how "successful" their life is blablabla..

People that really have a "rich" or successful life normally don't say anything

It's like fast riders, they normally don't show off or post their lap times or videos

Kind of sad really

You didn't pick up on the sarcasm. I drew attention to my signature. 1972 Honda CL175 Bragging?? Dream bike: Honda Dream 305 Bragging?? Really?? You've attacked me before, it's the internet, no biggie.

Well, 'success' can be looked at on a micro or a macro scale. i.e. small goals that we set and then succeed in, vs succeeding overall at life. But again, what looks like success to one particular person may not look so successful to someone else. Can someone be considered successful if they don't yet own a house? Can they be successful if they earn under 70K? I suppose it depends on what goals the individual has set, and whether they have met them. But ultimately many people remain unhappy, because once they have met certain goals they will always set their eye on the next one.

Right. I want to get away from measuring success in mileposts of achievement. I feel successful living is being content and in good spirits as much as possible. That's why drugs and alcohol are so popular. Unfortunately they're a bandaid solution. There's got to be a better way.

well happiness is not the same thing as success. So you can be successful and unhappy - or happy and unsuccessful.

Or ummmm unhappy and unsuccessful.......*eyes well up with tears*

Maybe I'm obtuse but I always thought the major motivator for success is the happiness it will bring. Happiness being your elevated status and privilege. Why else?

Define success:
to be able to buy back time

ie. knowing i can take 2mths to travel the world with my kid

ie. to take the time needed to better my lap times

ie. finally get to building my dream bike from scratch

All this with out the worry of if i can pay the mortgage or pay the bills or fix the car or put gas in the car etc

money doesn't define success nor does it make you happy - but it sure does buy you back a lot of time.

Lotto Max here i come!! :)

F it! I'm outta here, too much bone heads bragging about how successful they are and how much shat they have and don't post any evidence.

Right now GTAM= dick measuring contest

I hear you brother. Ride reports can be a lot like that.

^ well sure, people try.

Most people think getting stupid rich will make them crazy happy. The typical lottery winner experience is a good example of how that's not true.

Or becoming Eastern Regional Vice President in charge of blahblah is what they really want....

So success and happiness are not the same thing (unless you define it that way, which is fair), and sometimes success doesn't bring happiness at all.

Pleasure is also something that's easily confused with happiness - not the same thing.

Success...

To laugh often and much.
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children.
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends.
To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch,
or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

to be able to do what you want, when you want to

I used to think that it was being able to spend without worrying.

But some of the richest people that I've ever met are the most unhappy. I'm not passing judgment on them, but I feel like the richest people I've met are so bored with being able to buy everything that they just spend on drugs to get a kick out of anything.

I'm paraphrasing largely, but a study was done and it found that after 75k, the "difference" in happiness was negligible. I'm not rich, but I personally found life more fulfilling when I was struggling.

Excluding the dictionary definition of the word, defining success is different for everybody. For me, its all about your state of mind and so success = happiness. Thats it.

so growing tomatoes in your back yard is same thing.
