Deals on helmets. Do you know any?

What's everyone's thoughts on used? I see some on kijiji all the time but wonder who would buy a used one?
I bought one off kijiji, the owner decided not to get into motorcycling. I got my shoei rf1100 for $240 brand new condition.

What's the issue with a 4-year-old helmet that is new but been sitting on a shelf?
People think the inside material will have deteriorated by the 4 years, and won't be good as a 1 year old helmet.

nothing really...other than some guys thinking the foam and other materials get brittle and degrade just sitting there. Only real concern is warranty issues because for most companies its 5 years from date of purchase or 7 years from date of manufacture whichever comes first.

Actual degradation in the materials occurs from UV rays, heat, sweat and other **** that happens with day to day use. If a helmet has been sitting boxed away for years there's nothing wrong with it other than it may be an outdated design, but I'm sure many guys here will disagree...

OP, stick to a quality helmet, you don't have to spend $500+ but at least get something from a reputable manufacturer.

Here's some prices for lower to mid-range helmets. These are all Rider's Choice show prices which will be in effect til April.

HJC Cl-17: $119.99
Bell Qualifier: $129.99
AGV K4: $209.99
Shoei Qwest: $299 solid, $319.99 graphics
Shoei RF1100: $329.99

Is this a "people think" thing or is there any grain of truth there and the safety qualities might be compromised? I'm guessing that since helmets are made from mostly synthetic material (except maybe the cotton or leather fabric on the pads), they are not biodegradable and would last for ever in a landfill.

most manufactures say on there site to replace it every 5 ish, or so. i contacted HJC and told them i have a 10 year old helmet. it sat in the basement in the dark for a long time as i used to go out when i was younger with my dad wore it maybe 50 times.. then sat forever, they emailed me back and wanted to call me to advise me ( so they didnt need to put anything in writing which i understand) they never did call me but i assume they were going to say its ok. i mean the helmet has no marks on the paint, visor, anything it looked brand new. foam inside was also brand new. and i have my GF who keeps pushing me to try and buy a new one. yes i get the foam is old but its not even dried out. it is soft to the touch as much as her 1 year old helmet it. so i plan to wear it this year and maybe for the next few. if i keep my eyes open and see one for a good deal in colours i like. i will pick it up, but sure wont go out of my way to replace it unless it gets dropped

read what I wrote above...

No, there hasn't been any testing done on brand new old stock helmets. This whole "5 year lifespan" theory started because of the manufacturers wanting to cover their own *** because of liability or insurance issues. Also it doesn't hurt to encourage customers to get a new helmet every few years...

I rode in my RF-1000 from 2009 to 2013 and put close to 80k km on it, its still in decent shape but the little red fastener clasp thing eventually wore out and now it won't click in. I loved the graphics on it which were limited edition for 2009 so I got one second hand for $250 that the guy literally wore a few times around the house and sold his bike because he realized how much insurance was. The accessories were still untouched and it had new helmet smell, so I was quite happy considering I paid over $600 for the first one. However I think I'm just going to keep for display maybe wear it occasionally, its irreplaceable now so I'd hate to crash in it.

I love Shoei and will be getting a RF-1200 for everyday use in a week or so...

Thats nothing.

I rode in my RF1000 from 2004 to 2010.
Crashed in it in 09, and sent it to Shoei for inspection. They cleared it, and i rode it in for another year.

Use it as a back up helmet now.

did you have any issues with the little red clasp getting loose? I know it depends on how heavily it was used and years don't really matter because someone may ride 60k in 3 years whereas another dude may not even do that in 10...Just wondering if I'm the only one...

Zero issues with mine. Even the iridium visor held up perfectly for all those years.
Now it has small imperfections after the crash ..

Yup gp is good stuff, they price matched a helmet that was on sale by another dealer across the city and saved me 2hrs of travel.

I also bought my shark from there and when I went to pay for it they advised me they had a sale on for %20 off the helmet! I was ready to pay full price but they saved me close to $100.

Dave at Competiton Cycle has some good deals on Bell helmets right now too.

revzilla has some decent helmets on there clearence / sale section. or check the bike show in march

Details? This is a brand new helmet, how low can they possibly go?

Love the GP-Tech I got on closeout.
Honestly, I was ready to pay retail ($899) for it, I just asked Jeff if he can do anything about the price.
I'll tell you this much, you won't find a cheaper price even online, whether it's from the US or Eurpoe.

+1 for Dave @ Competition Cycle, he has a good selection of Bell helmets, NEXX and some Arai's.

Ok so wait, there hasn't been any testing on old helmets to see if they still offer the same protection but you can say that helmets last until the clip to fasten the excess strap doesn't work anymore?
