Dad uses Facebook to expose online predators

"welcome to the interwebs. where the men are men, the women are men and the children are fbi agents"

No, I'm saying that the car is a static object, even when placed as "bait" but a police officer, pretending to be a minor, takes an active role in the interaction.

Ahh..so it's a definition of entrapment that you're arguing here. Well, I suppose at what point do you draw the line? If a police officer is encouraging to take money, is he culpable in some way? Perhaps..

what kinda idiot just randomly accepts sexual advances on fb anyways?

The BC guys did it on "Plenty of fish" a dating site known for guys trying to hook up with girls.

Watch some of the American police shows, like COPS, when they're doing drug stings. You just have to ask yourself if the guy they hit up, who takes them to the actual dealer, would have ever done so unless prodded to. Lots of people, who don't do drugs themselves, know people who do. Knowledge isn't necessarily criminal. It becomes so, when used.

A bait car is just another car on the street. It doesn't have a big "steal me" sign on it. Now when you leave the keys in it, you're treading the line.

I think if you steal a car with keys in it, you are still guilty of theft regardless. I suppose you should also charge the cop for encouraging illegal activities..that would be more fair I think.

Putting aside the children. I think the degree of involvement and behaviour of the cops is really the determining factor on whether this is right or wrong that probably changes on a case by case basis.
However, from reading the first article, I get the idea that they aren't just putting up a fb profile and waiting like a bait car.

This is more like a cop coming to GTAM, posting for a spirited ride, leading that ride, and busting everyone that shows up 10 minutes in.

And yes, there is something seriously wrong with that.

I was once approached by one of those entrapment people.. Was in a general GTA area chatroom, mostly occupied by 25-30yrold nerds.. Was mostly distracted with something else (probably forums) when some "chick" sent me a PM and started buggin... I was mostly giving one-word answers, mostly uninterested in the convo, but too lazy to tell the person to bug off, but I noticed that the person kept mentioning how "she" drinks, tokes and guys in their 30's inviting "her" for drinks. At that point I asked along the lines of "wtf, how old are you?" (I thought, some annoying 17-18yrold just wants to score booze/weed) and the person tells me 13.. My reaction was "wtf, you should wait until you're 18-19 before you decide whether you wanna get into that" and I never heard from that person again.

My point is that I got approached by this person in a general chatroom, mostly frequented by adults. I was engaged at the time so I wasn't out lookin' for pussy and in any case, I'd have preferred something more confident and mature. Therefore, not a good target for such a program lol However, you have guys that are into younger chicks and 16 is the legal age of consent in Canada (used to be 14 until a couple of years ago). So if some guy starts off thinking he's talking to a 17-18yrold, his other head starts doing his thinking, he might even miss the mention of how old she is, but he could still end up in some legal hot water that he never would have landed in had a cop not entrapped him into such a situation.

That reminds me of those Montebello QPP officers who dressed up as Black Bloc and tried to induce a bunch of peaceful protesters into rioting. At least the protest leaders had cool heads, saw them for what they were, so their colleagues had to "arrest" them in order to prevent their unmasking.

Yes, but not everyone has the same moral strength. The keys being in the car could be the difference between that person stealing or not stealing the car.

Twice in the last year I have found cash in an ATM that someone forgot to take with them. Both times it was $40 and both times I did not see anyone at the ATM before me. I made no effort to find out who that cash belonged to, into my wallet it went. A friend of mine told me I should have gone into the bank and told them that whoever was at that ATM last left their cash.

Meh.

If you found $40 in an ATM would you take it? What if it was on the sidewalk? What if it was $500? What if it was $10,000? What if it was in someone's wallet/purse that was on the sidewalk? Had i found a wallet/purse with cash in it along with ID i would have returned it but if all i find is cash... finders keepers. (altho if it was a bigger amount i'd hold onto it.. if i learned who it belonged to i'd return it but I doubt i would rush to the police station to hand it over) Maybe I am morally poor or bankrupt?

This is basically about being ok with actively goading people who would not have broken the law otherwise into breaking the law.

exactly, the car doesn't tell the person "hey buddy, steal me, you'll get thousands of dollars for me" (mind you I do remember a pig face cd with a sticker on the cover that said something along the lines of "Steal this album, and if you won't steal it, at least copy it and give it to all your friends." I always wondered how many people attempted to steal it and thought that it was sad for the record store owner cause they had the losses.

It was the cover of Gub. My vinyl copy was the same, although I paid for mine, as the indie record store I supported (Poptones) was owned by a friend. I still think the Revolting Cocks putting a condom under the wrapper of their CD single cover of Do 'Ya Think I'm Sexy? was a better marketing ploy, however.

It's a moral issue for sure. I had to try to explain to someone once that if a bicycle does not have a lock on it that it's not his to take. I'm not sure when that happened. I understand it's common sense, but it's not right. I think if you find money and you have a reasonable chance of finding who owns it (reasonable also takes into account how much money there is etc.) than you really ought to try to return it. $20 in the middle of nowhere with nobody around, meh..that might be going in my pocket too.. :-)

Yeah I paid for my copy too. I liked some of the other spin offs better... which reminds me, i should hook up my vcr and copy "in case you didn't feel like showing up - live" on to dvd.

My VCR ate mine. I found it and You Goddamned Son of a B!tch in AVI online though. I assume you've seen the infamous Chris Connelly poetry/masturbation recital in Glitch?

on the topic of jailbait...I'm 20 and it's crazy 'cause I just left my teens and girls that are 17 look 21. Sometimes I'll talk to a girl and find out that she's 16, but I never would've guessed unless I started talking about certain things. And those certain things can't even be sex 'cause nowadays kids in elementary are having sex frequently. It's especially weird for some people 'cause when they were younger, any girl could be hot (from 15-however old) 'cause they were that age.

I know some dude who's 21 and dating a 15 year old - you guys would probably think she was a dime if you ever saw her. And it's not even like the dude's a loser or has no game. That's freaking scary...

I wonder what you guys think is acceptable for dating younger? For me, university/college age is fair game. When I was in high school, even 1 year younger was a big stretch. Divide your age and add 7 for the standard socially acceptable age :p

"French Rule" is half your age, plus seven. I'd say that a good place to start, if you're legally an adult, is for the other person to at least legally be an adult.

I was out chillin with a bunch of buddies one day back in highschool and one of the guys started bitching about his little brother coming to him freaking out cus he was having sex with a girl and she started bleeding (period). His brother was 12... Part of me keeps thinking it was some sick joke but he was pretty serious.
