COVID and the housing market

Awkward social/cultural faux pas. I used to run a social club in Paris years ago and heard lots of stories from au pairs and nannies that worked for some prestigious families. Possibly one of the most awkward stories was one au pair who when trying to make conversation at breakfast using bad French mistranslated the phrase “are there any preservatives in this jam?”.

The family wondered why their new hire was asking if they kept condoms in the breakfast food.

I would have to take English lessons before going to England.

"Come to tea." Here it means a mug of dishwater. There it could be a meal.

"Knock me up in the morning" isn't a sexual message. It means "Call on me in the morning"

An F. A. G. is a bundle of kindling to start a fire and is also slang for a cigarette. Looking for one has no gender implications or preferences

After dinner everyone went to the sauna buff naked including the teenaged daughter. Talk about social adjustment.
Truth. Most homes I visited had saunas in the basement. They love it.

The term “Fanny pack” always brings me out in immature giggles here.

No Dutch or Scandi in my background I know of, but I love rollmop pickled herring, with slices onions and capers if they are available. I'll eat your portion.
And I'll lick the sour cream spoon, if its 15%, lite cream is a useless product.
I also ate the guinea pig in peru. The octopus in Greece and the sweetbreads in France, if you can cook it, I'll eat it.

Haggis?

It's better if you don't know what's in it. The French would call it pate and charge three times as much.

A bunch of husky Scottish lads eat it up, put on skirts and blouses, go outside and throw telephone poles in the air. It's like bad drugs.

Since this is a housing thread, kind of, would anyone know what a modest detached fixer upper in Guelph would have cost in the mid 1970's?

I'd guess $15,000 - 35,000.

The townhouses I live in were $30 grand in 1973...

Now they're approaching half a mil.

I don't know how anyone not already in the housing market can get in anymore... maybe with a sizeable down-payment from the parents...

Even that often isn't enough anymore. You still need to get approved (and pay off) the balance. I guess it all depends on how sizable, but even with a cheque for 100K, many people would have trouble getting in with this craziness.

^this
Unless you have pre-built equity from a previous home, or parents with equity or money, you aint getting in

Even with a large downpayment, with the bidding wars and the insane market, be prepared to overspend anywhere from 100-300k over asking

No way you're paying that mortgage working a regular job unless you're willing to have tenants

Edit:
Did I share this before?

Only way you getting in

a) momma and poppa help you a ton
b) you come into a nice big sum of money
c) you are making $150-200k each

My real estate agent was at our Friday night cocktail campfire, she's been in the game 30yrs . We were laughing , her first yr in she made 50K in commisions and was killing it. Now she makes 50K on a 3 day sales cycle. List ,take bids, sell, repeat.

shes not exagerating , she listed my house on a friday, I signed the papers with the new owners on sunday, I gave her a bit over 50K for three days work and I got the friends and family discount rate. Gal needs to make a living......

Daughter has been bugging us to move to a place called "Morningside Retirement" out in New Hamburg.$500k+$650 maint.
NO THANKS.
That's more like where my relatives are. It's a nice intermediate step between owning and doing/organizing all the maintenance on your own house and a hi-density retirement apartment. Depending on expected timeframe in that style of living though, renting may make more sense than buying (although most discourage that approach as they want lots of turnover and liquidity for their owners).
