COVID and the housing market

Every city has a different way of dealing with homeless people. Lots of bleeding hearts criticize the cops and politicians, but nobody wants them living in their backyard.

Cool interim solution. Having to relocate a village twice a year isnt going to work long term though. I wonder if they are going to work hard at permanent housing before the winter or if they all go on summer vacation and then have a bigger problem in five months when you have a group of people that is happy and secure with their housing and you kick them all out (or relocate them).

I don’t want to come across as callous but quite a few homeless people don’t want to deal with the rules in shelters. We have room in places here but a number of homeless prefer to stay on the streets or occasionally set up these tent cities instead.

Probably safer due to covid, the homeless and the old are the ones dropping like flies

I think that is the root of many homeless issues. They dont have the money to compete for housing and dont want to be told what to do in a shelter or provided housing. Many end up in cities as that gives them access to income (panhandling or less legal pursuits), substances, some environmental protection amd warmth etc. You dont find many homeless people living in the forest outside of wawa.

True I don't know the answer but I do know that property crime goes through the roof wherever you put them. I would not want them in my backyard, they are housing a bunch near work and crime is way up now if it's not nailed down it's gone.

Fully 1/5 of house purchases in Canada are by investors according to the Globe. That’s not good for any person trying to get on the housing ladder.

Mommy and daddy money will save you

They werent arresting people, they were telling them they couldnt stay there and rooms were available for them. Large presence of enforcement has been shown to be necessary as limited numbers of enforcement staff results in a larger and more dangerous push back.

I dont know the best solution. Large homeless camps create issues like fire, sanitation and unfortunately safety issues related to substances and mental health. Spreading homeless people out can be dangerous for individual homeless people. Putting them in a hotel/shelter has virus implications and many do not want to go.

When going up against a population that is mostly unarmed, having every officer armed and a bunch with long guns adds unnecessary stress to the situation imo.

So with the parks full of the homeless where do the people in the 500 square foot condos go to get some fresh air. And ask the neighbours about the litter and feces issues.

Why don't the supporters with houses let them set up their squats in their back yards?

Trinity bellwood is the epicentre of wankers. I try not to be anywhere near that part of the city.

A friend listed his nice looking house (~2000 sq ft (3+1/3), above ground pool, 0.75 acre lot) in a country subdivision ~1.25 hours from Toronto. Subdivision used to be full of blue-collar workers. Listed for 950, sold for 1.1 in five days. Yikes. Doubt that was blue collar buyers.

Double edged sword on the pricing. He recently split from his wife. Without the crazy run up in house prices, he could probably have afforded to buy her out. With the house prices to the moon, he had to sell so she could get her share. Now they are both hosed as they have a decent chunk of cash but as most housing is pushing 1M, that is an ugly mortgage with one income.

The 1.3M house in our area sold…super curious what it went for but it’ll take some time.

It's a decent comp for your house. The pool was nice on that one but that could go either way for value.
House layout is identical basically, with some cosmetic changes inside.

If I remove the chimneys in the house it would open up the main floor very nicely.
