I heard it hit a sandbar, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and pictured one of those shifting bastards way out from shore. Based on the picture above, they were close enough to shore to see it with a flashlight. Amazing.
 
I read in one of the articles that once they hit the obstacle and slowly started listing, the captain turned the ship towards shore... so that picture might not be where they actually grounded initially.

Either way, operator error. No excuse for that stupidity.
 
I see they're following typical Italian procedure...charge everyone with murder, detain them all, drag them through 10 years of process, then give them a fine for being overly tired... I wouldn't rush to judgement just yet..
 
check other photos, theres a huge hole ripped in the hull, they hit rock. Sailing 350 meters offshore when the navigable route is 6 nauticle miles out, didn't call in a mayday to the coastguard, delayed launching of lifeboats (once you get to a certain angle they don't launch) didnt have a life boat drill prior to starting cruise ( another rule skipped). Told passengers a generator had quit thats why lights went out, lied to passengers about contact with the bottom.

The Captain was one of the first off the boat and safe, left senior officers to sort it out. Just like the last Italian cruise Captain that lost a boat a couple seasons back. That's why he is charged with what he is, convicted will be another matter, but you dont get to beat the passengers to shore. Maritime law is pretty clear on that. There is enormous responsibility that comes with that license.

Ship is actually owned by Carnival Lines, this should be interesting to watch.

My condolences to the families of those lost in the accident.

I mean, it certainly doesn't look good for him.. :-) I just like how the Italians immediately jump in and charge people without really any solid idea of what happened or why.. You're assumed guilty and have to prove your innocence..

Reminds me of the old joke about Italian tanks having 5 speeds. 4 reverse and one forward in case they get attacked from behind.

I waiting to hear the plausible explaining for this gong show. They would most likely have passive radar running on three screens, long range, short range and collision system, depth sounder on alarm, chart plotter (probably alarmed), multiple GPS and possibly forward fire sonar (on alarms) , and yet there they are parked up on the rocks.

I'm going to bet there was a bellissimo party going on, too many systems on that boat for multi- level failures without the help of human input. Hard to call in a mayday when the Coast Guard is going to ask, who's calling please? and the guy on radiophone is a 2nd assistant to the buffet manager.

I would expect considerably more investigation before they started throwing around manslaughter charges. It took them how many months to charge the first of the Vancouver rioters?? I mean, how long did it take for ol'whatshisname to get charged for that collossal goat **** in Prince William Sound??

Prosecutors believe Mr Schettino had been intending to perform the nautical equivalent of a fly-by past the island's main port when the accident happened. It had apparently become a long-standing practice for the Costa Concordia to sail close to the island in order to greet its inhabitants with a siren from the ship.


The tradition appears to have begun when the wife of a former senior officer lived on the island and he would take the ship close to Giglio to greet her. There were reports last night that the vessel's current officers had a friend ashore, from the Italian merchant navy, that they wanted to salute in a similar manner.


As the ship approached the port from the south, it sailed too close to the coastline and struck a rocky reef, known to locals as "Le Scole", a few hundred yards out. Islanders said they had never seen the ship try to pass so close before. Ships usually pass by up to five miles away....

That's what I read as well... and after initial incident, knowing the ship is taking on water, they moved even closer and basically parked it in the shallow water to prevent it from sinking.... that's why it's this close to the shore at the moment.

Well this is the Maritime equivalent, between the environmental fines, the legal liabilities, the salvage and restoration costs and the law suits that are going to follow this is a $100,000,000.00 problem. minimum.

Skipper will be better off shooting himself. They have him on video submitted by a passenger leaving the ship in a launch refusing to help.

A ship that size would carry 1800-2000 crew, all now unemployed and with contracts , they will have no compensation packages.

The nautical parallel of "here hold my beer and watch this"
