My wife is up for her Covid shot tomorrow. They are now starting on the 45-55 group here.

i wish they would just throw all the resources they have at this and get everyone who wants it vaccinated by spring so we can get back to normal.
we're going to run out as is.

There seems to be enough warning signs being tossed out by the federal government that some sort of tighter border lockdown is imminent, aside from what's already in place.

Ironically, from the wording of what I'm hearing, it has a lot to do with getting Canadians to stop hopping on airplanes for vacations in the weeks and months ahead - March Break is being mentioned a lot.

On the bright side, the numbers are finally starting to drop.

Imagine if everyone would just follow the rules how fast the numbers would be dropping...but that December spike goes to show you that people couldn't be bothered, went and visited family, and did all the other stuff they were asked not to do..

But it's a start at least - here's hoping as spring arrives we can get back to some semblance of normalcy again, or at least one like we had last summer.

In related news, interesting chart above - really makes it clear how under-reported a lot of positive cases were during the first wave - testing sure has improved.

Right after Valentine's Day hugs, St Pat's Day green beer fest, Easter, Mother's Day gatherings. April Fool's day may be sadly appropriate.

Poland is allowing people to start registering for getting the shot in some parts. My sister in law 32yr just registered and it waiting for her appointment. She’s the only one I heard about so will ask around. Cousins seem poised for a summer of travelling and hope throughout Europe.

‘Happy 1st bday COVID...’ .....

apparently 1 year ago today was the first case that was diagnosed.

Not a great anniversary.

In Canada. Some traveller from Wuhan. It was on the radio so I didn't dig in beyond that. Plus the Star has a lot of 'COVID: One Year Later' articles.
Yeah Canada, I was gonna say...if that's globally someone F'd up.

US Coronavirus deaths: 419K

US total deaths WWII: 418.5K

Another sad milestone.
Now I don't know if it is better or worse, but the population killed was vastly different. Instead of wiping out a large percentage of healthy 16 to 25 year old men (with small numbers of other age/sex represented) we are mainly wiping out the elderly and infirm. A cull is awful and nobody wants to do it and they are lasting mental repurcussions but there may be an opportunity to make positive changes with the opportunity presented. For instance, LTC was broken with years long waiting lists and crap care based on low funding per resident. If we reduce the number of residents in LTC, we can improve care. Sadly high mortality rate in LTC makes lots of open spaces to catch up on waiting lists of people who are at significant risk to themselves living in the communtiy.

I'm still stuck in the Bay Area and supplies of the vaccine seem to be flowing, its getting nurses and space to do the shots seems to be the problem now. Its mostly all Pfizer so you need to wait 15 mins afterwards but with social distancing requirements, there is no where to put the people.

My brother is in Pickering and he says it could be later in the year for him and his wife :( I though Canada were one of the first countries to get their order in.

Crap contracts by JT. No interim targets. For Pfizer contract is for 4M doses by the end of March so when plant capacity was reduced by 8%, they stopped the flow to Canada because there is no penalty as long as they meet their March deadline. Last I checked, JT had paid for 6 doses of vaccine for every person in the country and we pay a significant percentage even if they are never delivered or needed. Moron.

Is it only Pfizer in Canada. How about Moderna or Oxford?

To tell the truth. I was hoping my wife would get the Dolly Parton one, but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part... LOL

Moderna is approved and trickling in. One shipment every three weeks. Until now we have had mostly Pfizer with a few tastes of Moderna. Oxford not yet approved in Canada.

Curious, isn't the production of the vaccine being licensed out to more manufactures. It seems to me this would make sense in a time of global crisis instead of solely relying on the a few companies to supply everyone, and tripping over everyone who will be first.

Presumably it would happen if possible. Whoever can get doses out the fastest should capture the largest portion of the money. Even if they lose a bit to their partner, I would think they end up on top. My initial suspicion is that worldwide we only have so many vaccine production lines. Think about a normal person in Canada that probably averages less than on vaccine per year throughout their life and we are probably on the high end. Now you want to keep the normal vaccines and add an additional two per person. That is likely ~triple the current worldwide manufacturing capacity required and these are complex lines that aren't that easy to spin up.

I believe the Pfizer stuff is also being manufactured outside Detroit now. They are targeting around 1.3 billion doses this year.

I think a big problem is also logistics. I think it has to be stored at something like -100 degrees F once its manufactured and then packed and shipped in dry ice.

Stands to reason that for Ontario this would be a good source as its only 10 minutes across the bridge
