Its because of their "wet" markets. Where they keep the animals alive in cages in giant markets. They also have a huge demand for a wide variety of wild animals (either caught or farm raised). What you end up with is literally hundreds of different species that would have never come into contact otherwise living in unsanitary conditions. Disease transfers from one species to another, mutates, and then you end up with SARS, Corona virus, etc.

best post in the thread

yes, it was created by a supply chain and retail problem
foods that we consider exotic are common place in other cultures
I'm gonna pass on bat soup and monkey brain
but raised and prepared properly there likely are no health concerns

the markets with a mish-mash of species/produce/prepared foods
goods for sale range from live specimens, butchered meat, raw fruits and vegetable
and right beside them prepared - ready to eat goods - that's the problem here

What I read was from a leading virologist and head scientist during the SARS outbreak.

science? SMH

no need to read and understand any of that book based mumbo-jumbo
everything anyone needs to ever know can be understood just living a single life

Right now the Mrs and I are going through the what if's regarding how much to hunker down. It is my understanding that there are two main ways of contacting the virus.

1) People contact from hugging, kissing or even just breathing the same air. The fix is to avoid people. The Mrs and I are somewhat loners so not a big hardship.

2) Touch contact from picking up things infected people have handled. That is more difficult. I've heard that the virus can last from 2 to 9 days on surfaces, depending on what surface.

I learned about transference by doing a repair in an ink plant. Printers ink is like very thick molasses and only dries if it's a millionth of an inch thick on a piece of paper.

The place was a pig sty and I got ink on my tools. I cleaned them with Varsol before I put them back in the van, also cleaning my hands and boots.

Four days later my wife noticed some pink staining around a light switch, ink. I obviously missed a spot of ink and later touched it. Then maybe I turned on the radio, then picked up a clean tool. If I cleaned my hands again I would have picked up the ink again if I touch the radio or a tool that had once been clean.

How far does one take this virus contact thing?

I just heard from a friend near Ottawa and they may be going through a health crisis. I would love to see her but if she is or becomes immuno
compromised what then? Her family helped me big time through my troubled teens.

My daughter and a friend went to a movie yesterday. Including them there were three people in the theatre. Drinks before in an empty restaurant that was closing the next day according to the waitress.

If you have interactions with people who are vulnerable then you should limit exposing yourself as much as possible.

If you`re going to Ottawa and want to limit the risk then i would suggest driving up and observing practical precautions (distance, sanitize, gloves, etc).

Thanks, I read, heard about this from elsewhere but thought to ask again.

Maybe it is time for China to clean up it's act? I don't want to point fingers but the facts are this is what the 3rd time this has happened, this being the worst.

Points taken. IMO flying to Ottawa is hardly worth the time. Pre departure time, gate wait, taxi and departure times and various waits at the other end, luggage, rental car etc. I can drive it in 4 1/2 hours and have my car, Swiss army knife and bottle of sanitizer (Italian red).

Don't forget to wash you hands, this is key. If you are returning from being outside contact with anything doors, handles whatever other people might touch, when you get home wash your hands. Also avoiding touching your face, especially when out because that is when transfer happens or could happen.

If you are dealing with tools, clean you hands and put on latex gloves, clean tools. Dispose of gloves.

As nice a visiting a friend in sickness might be, this is not self isolation, stay home contact them via some other method.

This is not a country thing, this is a human thing to do something about or not,
because the other monkeys don't have electron microscopes yet.

And you were worried about life altering injuries from motorcycles a week ago. Change your mind on that yet?

this topic was touched on briefly earlier, may warrant bit of discussion

apparently there's a fringe of the millenial and Z gens calling this the Boomer Plague
pretty nasty thinking, wondering how fringe it is?

this is being aggravated by the business closures like restaurants etc
almost entirely staffed by the above noted generations
they are without income, almost all paying rent
in an effort to save a generation they despise for ruining the planet

I understand there's party in KW today that may have this thinking as a side-element

Valid argument but closer to home, what about the St Lawrence Market? True, no jungle meat.

North America is affluent enough to throw out chancy food. When you're working for starvation wages the rules are different.

Cultures change slowly. Chinese medicine uses IMO stupid animal parts, rhino horn, bear gall bladders etc. Apparently haggis is illegal in the USA because of the sheep brain. It isn't just China.

A number of years ago I bought a bike from a guy agreeing that he delivered it and I drove him home a bit north. On the way he mentioned running a commercial pig farm at one point in his life and the hygiene protocols were in many ways stricter than a restaurant. NO ONE went into the barn wearing street clothes. Even inspectors had to change into sanitary coveralls and "barn only" boots plus hair nets etc.

To contain this there will be a lot of attitude adjustments needed. A bit over the top but think like you're arriving home after wading through a neck deep swamp. Anyone want a hug?

Well lets see now, who has been subjected to more airborne lead and asbestos particles  and what if I do get it from my grand child and succumb to that because of that?
Oh well, at least I did not get it from licking airplane toilet seats (y)

In my younger even more foolish days and before the 417 I did it in four hours flat in a 1300 cc VW. West Toronto to Carleton U. P****** off a lot of drivers.

Possibly I did not understand the question.

If you want to be angered, check out posts about tim hortons in cobourg. Staff was having that discussion. They carried it quite far (to the point that the patrons hurriedly left before whooping the entitled uninformed pricks).

Some valid points and as a boomer I have to admit that we have not been good stewards of the planet. However if you read "Limits to growth" and believe it (I do in principle) even if the boomers had been more conservative in resource usage there will be a final adjustment. The train will eventually go off the tracks. We can only adjust the speed of its travel when it happens.

On the other hand are the M and Z generations saying the boomers screwed up the planet before they had a chance to?

okay
so there is definitely an undercurrent of discussion
mainly from Mils and younger
that this virus being aimed at the elderly, should be called the Boomer Plague

not only are they ****** at Boomers for raping the planet and departing with all the spoils
they are now suffering the indignity of being laid off to protect the generation they despise

I'm wondering how wide spread this is, or if it's just the media blowing it up as usual

Like our parents were? :| People it is not a generation thing and it is not a country thing and it is not even a nice thing to talk about, it is a new way of life.

Oh and if you don't do a better job of responding to these outbreaks :/ then get ready for Covid-20 because I doubt it will be much friendlier.
