The funny thing about the new trump statements is it actually gives me a little more respect for him. I still think he's a tool, but if he really was doing it on purpose to reduce panic, that's better than doing it from ignorance. I'd really have to see the timeline on all his statements, both to Woodward, and to the public before I'd cut him any real slack however.

Roughly the same time that Turdeau was talking about racism. I don't know if Trudeau knew or not, but he acted like he didn't.

"The Foundation for Economic Education"?

I see. So their priority is to keep the economy open in the interest of the almighty dollar no matter what else happens. Gotcha.

They're picking and choosing their comparisons. Italy and Spain were hit hard early before anyone really knew what to do other than lock down. Better comparisons would be, for example, Norway, Denmark, and Finland, who are Sweden's neighbors, and have very comparable lifestyles. Hmm, let's see based on Worldometers.
Sweden 578 deaths per million citizens. Cases are on a slow burn, deaths have almost stopped.
Denmark 109 d/m. Resurgence in cases but almost no new deaths (basically the same situation that we have here).
Finland 61 d/m. Resurgence in cases but they hardly had any to begin with.
Norway 49 d/m. Again, resurgence in cases but they hardly had any.

And although Sweden did not have an official "lockdown", they most certainly did many things to slow the spread - and it most certainly had an economic impact that seems, if anything, to be pretty close to the effect of a lockdown anyhow.

The USA will become the poster-child for a developed-world country doing next to nothing to slow the spread despite having months more time to do something. Just wait. In terms of deaths per million, USA has passed Sweden, passed Italy (yesterday), the UK (which also had a poor early response) is up next in about a week, and Spain is open to question depending on whether they can gather themselves up again. At that point, the only European country ahead of the USA will be Belgium, who counted their deaths differently than everyone else.

An interesting commentary about an alternative to the lockdown and the logic is there ...

I don't know if one can compare the USA with any other country on the planet. A first world country with third world medicare. Profit driven gun culture. Profit driven medical culture. Profit driven educational system. Profit driven religious system. What could go wrong?

Unfortunately that's one of the main things that makes America great and terrible, depending on which side of the economic spectrum you are on.

Lockdown to limit Covid spread? Can't do that, too much of a hit to the economy, Government doesn't want to pay people to stay him in the middle of a pandemic as every other country has.

Climate change? Can't do that, too many jobs lost in the short term. Keep on burning the coal.

Good education? Can't do that, costs too much.

Increase minimum wage, worker rights, maternity leave? Can't do any of that, hurt corporate profits too much.

I'm trying to figure out how the health care insurers are handling things. If they are tied into existing policies they will be hurting. When the policies are renegotiated rates will be adjusted.

A mercenary insurer might want companies to fail so they lose the liabilities from C-19 employees.

The sharks are on a feeding frenzy and they will feed on their own.

Let's be real, Trump strives on panic. His whole modus operandi is to make the world seem as scary and turbulent as possible. See his comments on Antifa, Mexicans, immigrant caravans, MS13, liberals will take all your rights, etc. He creates panic at every opportunity where there is none.

No matter how you slice it, "reducing panic" was not the right move. Most obviously the Trumpians follow every word he says, to this day people are regurgitating false comments such as the "death rate is minisculy low", "seasonal flu is much worse, those Dr's that worked their lives to be experts, they don't know anything", etc.

Was he doing it to punish the blue states that were hit hard early? Was he doing it to perk up the economy? Was he doing it to make him look strong amid chaos? No matter the reason, the results speak for themselves. Many deaths, cases, and enduring scepticism of covid and any measures taken to control it.

I really can't think of any way to spin his reaction in a positive light.

Maybe if you use a really bright light, and shine it inside his body  he already suggested that once.
A UVC light should kill the virus right? It's probably slightly safer to use UV to sterilize your insides than bleach.

How did you get that so bass ackwards? "Trump strives on panic"?
Please explain.

I gave examples. Perhaps fear would be a more apt term.

Looked through what you said again. I still don't see it.
The Trump supporters I've heard from think the opposite, that Trump's opposition is drumming up panic to try and take advantage of the situation.

search out David Frum's tweets from today. I think it’s spot on. If I find them I’ll post them.

Also..if you’re asking why this guy matters....he was a speechwriter for GW Bush. A neocon. Very conservative.
