I only use Twitter for motocross stuff because I get instant updates on race positions and the like.

if you set up your lists/twitter feeds right (i.e. follow the right people for your interest), then it's like doing an automated Google search of updates to things that interest you.

Long time ago when I ran motocross a guy would hold up a whiteboard with your position, now you have to pull out your phone a check Twitter??? Not sure I could corner with one hand and hold the phone

lol no, just keeps me up to date with where friends are, whose racing where, who is hurt and the other internals of the sport. I have a few friends that are pros and directly in the media, so I can get news pretty quick.
It's nice someone tweets out they are going to be riding somewhere, or a track announces they are open and the conditions and you can basically get a group of people together for a ride in no time.

And, now yes, my phone is used for personal lap timing. With our transponders there is an app that is linked live to the main computer system capturing the lap times. So I have time behind the leader or the guy in front, lap time of the lap I just completed etc. So instead of me waiting a lap to come around by the mechanic area to see times/gaps etc from the previous lap, my pit board person (the gf) can throw up info that is pretty much "real time". Do I need it? Nope, but it's cool and fun!
