Coffee: McDonalds, Tim Hortons, Starbucks...or?

yes, quality fresh ground beans and fresh press = good java

of the options listed, while travelling, especially on the bike:

1) McD's tolerable coffee at a place with free wifi and good bathrooms

2) Starbucks Pike Place is good, but not usually located conveniently when riding

Timmies coffee sucks
can't understand why people line up for it

If you want a great flat white, go to Oz, they are almost all outstanding. Flat whites in Canada are quite shite. I am still hunting for somewhere that can make them as I remember (the chains suck, working through small cafes with no luck).

This. I settled on "flat white" as my order in Australia.

Here? Starbucks is out - too expensive for what it is (and their coffee always tastes burnt to me). McDs is out - generally having a coffee is a proxy for sitting down to take a break and/or chat with folks as far as I am concerned, and McDs doesn't work for that. Homebrew also doesn't work for that, I don't bother. Timmies works for that to some extent. And Higher Ground in Belfountain works for that ... they know my face there ...

In most of the rest of the world, coffee shops are places to hang out with people, or to stop and take a break - which is what I do as well. Come to think of it, I don't recall ever seeing a drive-thru in Europe or Australia. Not saying they don't exist but you're s'posed to stop and hang out for a while with your espresso.

I prefer mcd over Tim's but Tim's is closer to work so I go there if I run out of coffee at work.

I use Kirkland ground coffee. I use cheapo drip machine at home and pour over at work. I also have a cheapo French press but I don't use it as much since it's hassle to clean and I get coffee grinds on my cup.

Someone please educate me. Is it worth buying a burr grind machine and do beans instead?

Red rose, two milk, one sugar, bag in medium size cup.

When on the company dime, grande chi latte.

I think you should disclose how you take your coffee as part of your review. If you drink double-doubles, Americanos, Cappuccinos, Macciatos, Lattes, Frappes etc, then coffee is a flavour, not a beverage.

For me coffee is best when served as a fine beverage, served neat like other fine beverages -- no sugar, no milk or cream, or cinnamon or caramel or flavor shots -- the only ingredients in the beverage are roasted coffee beans and ice cold water. Would you accept an opinion of fine scotch from someone who treats it to a split of Coke? Or a great Riesling that's spritzed up with Sprite?

I grind my own at home and brew it in a Cuisinart drip maker during the week (we need 10 cups in the morning for the fam), a french press on the weekends, and a 1 cup Melita dripper when on the road with my bike. My son dates a girl that works for Starbucks, she drops of tons of Reserve collection beans. They are fantastic, I can't say I have a favorite but if I had to chose one it would be the Ethopian Mountain reserve.

would also like to get into roasting my own beans
anyone here into that?

Green Coffee Beans

tried it in a popcorn maker...made an almighty mess....wife banned me from doing it again within a certain distance of the house.

also tried it in a dry hot fry pan. Both methods not too bad actually, just messy with the papery skins on the beans floating off as they roast.

In case anyone is interested when the coffee farms send their bean crops off for auction they are tasted using a pour over technique to make the coffee and it’s served black.

I have a few hundred grams of some of the most expensive coffee you can buy, (geisha beans, not the civet stuff that’s more of a novelty) left that I got from a farm. It’s OK but not really to my taste. It’s really fruity and not worth the $15 US a cup that some places were selling it at.

I have a professional barber cut my hair, a distiller make my whiskey, and a tailor make my suits. I save the DIY stuff to things you can normally expect to do as well or better than someone for hire. Like maintaining motorcycles and cars.

I let professional roasters take care of my beans.

It’s not that hard to do on a small scale (a cup of beans at a time). You just need to get the time in contact with the heat right (for your taste) and keep the beans moving. A popular hobbyist device is an old hot air popcorn maker. If you want to get into blending then the pros have way more experience and for large amounts they have the expensive machinery required. Like I said though, it can be messy. The green beans have a thin papery coating that only separates when you’re roasting and it gets everywhere. It’s fun and satisfying to taste coffee you roasted and then made that’s as fresh as can possibly be.

I drink Americanos at home , its not a flavour. If you dont know the difference that's sad.
McD's coffee on the road is pretty civilized, its miles ahead of Tims, but bear in mind Tims number 1 seller is the double double. Thats 30% cream and sugar, those people crave the fat not the coffee.
I use a nespresso on the boat, convenience.

Gaggia super automatic at home, lavazza medium beans (keeps the peace) . I thought about roasting beans but the longer I thought the easier in got to avoid that idea.

Yup Starbucks is to rich for me. I can order my cream and sugar at which ever speaker has the shortest line. I do love me some Boston cream donuts to go with my 3x3 though so Tim’s ftw more often than not.

ya I’m not really a coffee guy as much as a sugar addict.

a splash of cream or black
milk, hell no!

and 2 cubes in my scotch with a splash of water
sa·cré bleu
