Just a thread to bounce back and forth some ideas for Christmas Gifts...

For me the kids always seem to be fairly easy to shop for as they have a pretty good idea of what they want. Shopping for the wife always seems to be difficult for me, trying to get something "thoughtful" off list...

Regardless....wife, husband, partner, GF, BF, teen, pre-teen, inlaw, parent, grandparent, cat, dog, etc. Does anyone have some good ideas to share?

My wife and I mostly try to get/give experiences as presents. We have enough crap. For nieces/nephews, that is often paying for lift tickets and teaching them to ski or bringing them to wonderland or . . . .

For cool presents, I have gotten my brother a beautiful vintage hunting knife and found a handmade black powder .50 that my parents are giving him. I'll put up pics once I am near it. Those are obviously somewhat niche presents and not applicable to many people.
 
My wife and I have suspended gift giving. For her bday I get her a gift card to a store I know she frequents. Otherwise she's content to buy her own things and I hate seeing gifts collect dust on a shelf. Works for me!

Which reminds me, need to head to Yorkdale soon for a gift card lol.

I hate giftcards. Way too many horror stories (either straight-up fraud and the card is empty or the retailer bails). "Here is a $100 bill to spend at xxx".
 
Just ordered a 9th gen iPad for my wife from Walmart as they had a deal on them.

Kids commandeered hers so I’d rather she has a non beat up one.

My daughter would get excited if I give her a rock with something shiny on it.

Son is into beyblade so new or used doesn’t matter to him.

Youngest…I can give her a box and she’ll be happy.

We go cheap / used gifts for the kids because they get bored easy.

Friends…bottle of whiskey for the guys. Wives get some candles or something or other from my wife.

Parents are tough. I’m running out of watches for dad, and wife deals with moms present.
 
I'm not great at gift ideas.... unless the gift is for me. So I leave that to my wife.

My daughter is simple and doesn't expect much. I bought her a Leatherman Multitool . She made me return it as it was too expensive ($164) and told me to buy it when it goes on sale. I picked one up last week as part of a Black Friday sale. 25% off.

Since my son got into hockey, most of of the gift giving is hockey related. This year he will also be getting a Leatherman Wave.
Hopefully they do not loose the multitools and hold onto them (and use them) forever.

I like experiences as well or at least gift that will last a long time. Not something that will loose interest in a few months.

No Offense @Jampy00 but that's one I never understood. Just can't wrap my head around that one.

Do pets know what Christmas or Santa is?
 
I stopped buying presents for the adult members of my family about 8 years ago.
Instead, I pick some worthwhile charities (4 or 5) and make donations.
The kids still get taken care of as usual and the grownups don't seem to mind not getting another pair of socks.
Pay it forward, there are a lot of hurting people out there especially at Christmas.
Peace on earth, good will to all...
 
My daughter wants for nothing, she would rather I donate to a pet shelter , so I do .
My son wants Lego . They are $3-400. He’s 30 .
Mom gets a sweater and usually some interesting necklace I picked up travelling .
Wife wants a handmade toque and mittens from some shop that brings in Peruvian handcraft . Probably made by an 8yr old in some mountain village , for .65 cents a day .
That dog and cats get some new toys and treats and we buy a gift for our step dog . Yeah , that’s a thing .
I found a store in Hamilton called Sharp that specializes in Japanese Damascus blade kitchen knives , so I’m buying my own gift .

Far from it...but you best believe these dogs are happy to get gifts like the other kids.
Last year - this gift lasted 35 mins before it got beheaded and stuffing was all over the furniture.

Getting a gift for your pet is about the joy of giving.

I got our cat one of those electric flopping fish a few years ago. He didn't like it at first but I put a little catnip on it to get over the apprehension and now he loves it. Catnip is long gone but he plays with it constantly and lets me know when it needs to be charged. My wife actually hates it...

One Christmas our cat was constantly picking on an older cat. To have some fun for the kids I painted a rock black ("coal") and that is what the cat got. The best part, our youngest daughter exclaimed "Santa really does give out coal, I'm going to be good!"
 
We don't spend much as we're all cool with thrift store finds. Who cares if the book you just got has already been read. I always like the personal inscriptions you sometimes find in the fly leave of a used book.

Dogs love to be with happy people. They can sense moods and react. All the dogs I have had loved Christmas because we did. They would watch everyone open presents and you could just see how happy they were to be there with us. The first time I gave my dog a gift it was like 'is this really for me?? Can I open it?'. So much fun.

I dont think cats really care much....lol
 
Oil filters, coolant, mini-torch, accurate torque wrenches that go low, I ask for stuff like that. Stuff I know I'll buy anyways I just delay as I know fam will demand ideas. This way I don't get useless junk and they get gift ideas.

Wife doesn't want for anything either but she's pretty easy to shop for. Dinner out she mentions she likes a ladies outfit - Wait until wife uses the washroom - Ask lady where she got the outfit - put in phone - look up item when home and add to cart - checkout suggests adding a matching purse to get free shipping so sure go ahead - shopping done.
