I think that's harsh. I just had a few beers at the local legion, in that house the man is a saint.

Go ask a vet or serviceman/servicewoman for an opinion on Cherry... you might get enlightened.

no need for that

I supported them in a more significant way than running my mouth on TV

Agreed, you dont have to wear it on your sleeve(no pun intended), but I would be hard pressed to find anyone who doesnt respect, and appreciate and honor the sacrifice of the fallen, even if they dont wear poppies.
I agree, but I also think the simple act of wearing a poppy is a profoundly Canadian statement. I love this country and what it has offered me. My forefathers came here in the 1700s, my neighbors came in 2016 for exactly the same reason. We are both Canadians, we can honor the gals and fellas that made living here safe and free.

He said later today "Everybody should be wearing a poppy"

If he'd said something like that instead of singling out one group of people, trying to shame them on public television, he'd still be employed right now.
You don't know the people, you don't know what the fak they do in their lives that might be supporting them. Someone wearing a poppy might support vets less than someone who doesn't wear one...so if we're gonna judge based on that well so be it. Let's judge on appearances and see where that leads us... basically back to what our forefathers fought, which makes for a freaking ironic situation.

The money you put in the box is arguably more important than whether you wear the poppy you get for it or stick it in the sun visor of your car.

Reminds me though, when I was quite young, I applied to the CAF, but was turned down because of hearing problems :(
Plenty of people here who dont care about that or Canada.

I served, all you missed was a lot of push ups and yelling in your face.

IMPs are the **** though.

LOL. Important to whom? If money bothers them they can wear the same one year after year. There's just a bloody-minded group out there determined to trash the poppy campaign as a symbol of war. One Persian guy I talked to blamed our vets for the fall of the Persian empire and all the dictators in the middle east. The whole foundation of why we fought those wars is lost on a lot of people. Look at these dimwits with their rainbow poppies. Last year it was a white poppy as a form of rebellion. Some people aren't happy unless they can pull the other way and destroy something. So yeah, Don Cherry FTW.

The money.. that goes to the vet organizations? I'm sure it's important to those organizations and the vets that rely on them.

The money raised from the sale of poppies goes to the widows and widowers of the deceased vets.
Poppy Trust Funds
Which is why you should not put it on your Sun visor on Nov 12. Throw it out and buy a new one next year.

What a **** show. Fired for projecting an opinion that at least half the population agrees with. I stand with him %100 and believe what he said was absolutely correct.
Oh so you support bigotry, discrimination, and hatred..... I am sure the vets were fighting for that.

Not every vet was as pure as Joan of Arc. They went to fight and kill Nazi Germany.
My 95 year old father in law didn't like Quebecers or Indians. In his mind they were cowards and lazy. And he still feels that way.
But he still gets my thanks and respect. There is always another angle to look at something. No need for name calling.

Thing is in some cases they aren't wrong. The Balfour treaty led by the Brits after WWII arguably led to the largest group of displaced persons still affecting people today. Everyone has different experiences, none is more valid than anyone else's. Strange alliances and bad choices during WWII led to the partitioning of eastern Europe. Pretty sure quite a few people on the wrong side of the wall were a bit ****** off. Rather than assuming everyone's out to sabotage that which you find holy, maybe take a minute or two to ask why.

I have a very cool photo to share, is my Grandpa reading the August 2nd. 1914 Sunday edition of The Toronto World newspaper.
Armistice Day and WW1 wasn't even a thing at that time.

copy of the newspaper for those who care to read it.

My post might get trashed for not being on topic but it is way more interesting and informative then reading about Don Cherry.

Old buddy used to work the floor for our hamilton tv station. Amongst other shows, he worked DC's Grapevine. 5-6 yrs after it was done, buddy got sick. Diagnosed with the big C, he wasn't in his hospital bed an hour when the phone rang (for the 1st time).
You guessed it. It was DC calling to wish him well.
Sportsnet can kiss my lazy ass.

Cool! But reported. :geek:

As expected, it's being reported that SN wanted DC to apologize. He said he wouldn't as he had nothing to apologize for.

I agree that it would be a nice gesture for immigrants to accept the poppy on Nov 11

but like mentioned earlier by @bigpoppa, a lot of Canadians you see not wearing them
are going to have their own family histories of service and sacrifice
so let's not be so quick to judge them based on the colour of their skin

WW2 military deaths, below
I've highlighted 2 countries where a lot of people have emigrated from recently
and I have no doubt these Canadians and those who look similar are what Cherry was referring to
they fought against axis evil the same as western soldiers, and bled along with them
their families no doubt have histories of sacrifice

I was at a Tim Hortons yesterday very close to UofW. There was quite a mix of turbans, hijabs and a large number of young Asian students. I noticed there were very few poppies in sight. Could it be that a good percentage of them don't know what it's all about? If i asked them what a beaver tail was, or what poutine was, or what it meant when you said "Lord tunderin i miss da rock". How many would have a clue?
Most of us grew up with poppy day.
Just sayin.

There were very few poppies in sight across all segments of the population this year. This could be due to any number of reasons. Cherry's rant was typical Eurocolonial, white-supremacist, nostalgic-old-stock-Canadian nonsense. **** him.
