Check post 88 in this thread. You'll find everything you need there.

I tried bonding the back of curtis GPS cradle to the Ram mount base plate with Mighty Putty (cheesy commercial, but it was at canadian tire, so I thought I'd give it a try). The stuff dries solid like rock, but it would not bond to the plastic of the cradle. Having said that, I did not cut or file down the bracket on the back of the cradle so those plastic rails are now firmly embedded in the rock hard mighty putty which is firmly attached to the ram mount base plate. feels kinda sturdy. wondering if I should go around the outside of the mighty putty with some JB weld.

thoughts?

will the JB weld stick to the plastic of the cradle?

LOL Now you know why I did screws

but i'm wondering if it might hold. that putty is hard as rock, and I sank two screws into the putty on the base plate side.

but I know what you mean. even before I saw the putty separate from the cradle, I kept glancing at it nervously, half expecting it to just pop off!!

Thanks for the hardware, again.

Re: AquaBox

Medium-wide ARM AquaBox (RAM-HOL-AQ6U) is now $50 in RadioWorld . The print-out from their web page on may 24 says $25 . I guess RW doesn't need my business, so I'll do my best not to bring it to them from now on. It's cheaper to order from GPScity.com, even with shipping included.
Wow got mine just in time then. 50 bucks with ram mount and 3 in arm

For those wondering about the Aquabox, here's my setup. I used the medium-wide Aquabox and the RAM Clutch/Brake mount.

Here's the basic setup on the bike

Here's the padding inside the box. I cut the hole out of the back of the box for wiring, and a slot in the foam to accommodate the USB power wire and headphones. I used the bit of foam I cut out to shift the GPS up from the bottom of the case.

I also made this plug to use the car lighter adapter to power the GPS. It uses the same connector as a battery tender or some heated liners. The bonus us that is also will recharge my cellphone and MP3 player. $2 for the parts from Active Surplus and a little soldering :)

I have similar set up and works fine. I bought the powerlet stem adapter for my bike, so no worries about battery dieing.

In case you folks didn't know, those ferrite "noise filter" bulges mandated by FCC or some such bureaucracy are useless and can potentially break the cable they are attached to. Unfortunately, they are very often molded onto the cable and cannot be simply removed by cutting. A bit of beating with a hammer to "soften" them up and then cutting their shell with a utility knife does the job. Just be careful not to cut through the primary cable insulation, but even if you do it can be repaired with a piece of heat shrink tubing.

You can see the POS that offends both my sense of practicality and aesthetics in this picture. It's between the top end of the white wire and the hex bolt on the extension.

Thanks again.

You are welcome James. And you are right, a lot of work went into it, but it was also a lot of fun. Actually, I haven't had this much fun tinkering with IT related stuff in quite a while, and I work in the field :)

Thanks, I'll get one today at the source hopefully, and why it blew...hmmm, I think I know, I was farting around with ways to charge it. Think I got it hooked up (and working) to a $10 solar battery charger from Crappy Tire. Now I'm all set for camping without electricity.

That solar powered charger is on sale this week. It comes with about $6 worth of electrical connections (I call them pigtails), and it's on sale for $7.99.

Great tool to use if needed to prove your speed

Record your route evertime you go out

When you export that rounte into a .gpx file you can use the following web site to see al the data of your trip

Route taken - speed througt the route

Works with the CURTIS GPShttp://utrack.crempa.net/

Thanks for the website. That will come in handy.

Did anyone manage to make the screen properly viewable while mounted? The glare is pretty bad for me, regardless of angle, which relegates the GPS to more of a locator when stopped.

I don't have it mounted on a bike yet, but it's pretty hard to see in the car too sometimes. It's the way the screen is made and I doubt anything can be done about it except for putting some kind of shade around it...

Whipped up a few mockup shades (similar to the GlareStomper) and even a full recessed box with a window. No luck. The screen is just too reflective in sunlight. I'll peek at the links later. Thanks.
