cc limit for new riders

This isn't the first time I've heard this, but about 2 yrs ago it sounded more like a rumor. This morning I was chatting with a local cop here over riding and the death of the M1 rider last night and his passenger's life threatening condition came up. The officer said that there will be a law passed limiting the cc/size of the bike a beginner can ride. Are cops privy to forthcoming laws or something? Anyone here anything about this? Shoot, I don't want to have to sell mine should the law be passed during my M2.

And will disallowing a new rider a 1000cc sound so bad?

No, cops are not privy to the sausage making of legislation. I'm not aware of any such law being considered.

Haven't heard of anything, I call ******** but I support this.

I'd go so far as to requiring a race school or advanced riding courses to be allowed to ride one on public roads. The trackday/race junkies would appreciate this too as it would force our motorsport scene to grow.

.......or it'll out right kill it if the government ****s up the implementation.

if proposd changes are part of the Regulations (as opposed to a statute), then there is no Bill, no debate, no vote in legislature. you will just read about changes after fact.

the head hancho (leutenant governer in councile) has power to change regulations all by himself. if it indeed just part of regulations to change CC of bike.

God luck!

Doubtful as most Cruisers are larger CC capactity.

M1 licence needs to be harder to obtain, current set up of taking a multiple choice exam is far to easy.

^^ This.

Also hard to implement it just for motorcycle licenses. Do we start limiting hp/size about cars as well for new drivers? (e.g. G1 not able to buy Ferrari?)

Laws should have its limitations on telling us how to live our lives. It's time for people to take more responsibilities for their own safety & actions, and unfortunatly in this case, he paid for it with his life.

Uhm, why was there a passenger when he only has an M1? Isn't that a restriction?

TY, link is not working for me

Riding street legally and properly has nothing to do with riding on track, different skills. It could help with rider skill and ability to get out of trouble but in no way should be a legality as much I would like the increase on attendance to the sport

He was breaking the law

Thanks Captain Chad Obvious ?
Yeah, I get that...point is, what's to stop him from riding a high cc bike? Just another law to break, right?
(aside from the fact that he is dead. RIP)

Body positioning, throttle control, braking points, lines, and whatever else I missed applies to anyone on a motorcycle that wants to take turns at a decent speed. You can't really (safely) learn this stuff on the street. However, I'm not as competitive as you so our view points may be different.

I think the idea is that it's not just another law to break.

The classification of license you hold (M1, M2 [lets add M3] then a full M) dictates a displacement limit. If you have an M1 you are unable to register a bike over 250cc in your name, M2 would be 500cc, M3 would be 800cc, then the full M is unrestricted.

Lets also change the M1 to a full year and make rider training mandatory. Then a full year of M2 and M3.

Limiting cc's
I cannot find any evidence that limiting cc's has reduced accident rates. In fact, France's 100hp cap has had no effect on accidents. Still, cursory look so more research needed.

Training
I can write a multiple choice test and ride a 1000cc super sport? It's laughable, deranged. I would not allow anyone on a manual transmission two-wheeler that has not had formal riding training. (The manner of that training would change under my imaginary regime--to include discussion of youngsters wrapped around poles and their loved ones in ICU).

While I agree that "It's time for people to take more responsibilities for their own safety & actions" riding is a privilege, with social costs, so it is legitimate for the law to encroach. Furthermore, tougher regulation and more realistic training will lead to less accidents which in turn will lead to more and better riders.

Ok, how about the fact that I can be outrun by most 250s? My Shadow 750 doesn't have that much power.
How does it work when you're a fat *** like myself? 260lbs on a 250? Oh boy.

Surely i could have done the same speeds on my 400 or a 250 down rosedale to yield the same result...

Tim, majority of new riders are the over 40's riding cruisers. Crotch rockets are such percentage of the overall bike sales.

HP limits work ok in the U.K, but they also don't have anywhere near the amount of Harley's riding the roads.

But you are smart enough not to try. (not to talk ill of the dead)
