Catch can for DRZ400SM

I am trying to slowly get my bike ready for the upcoming Drumbo track day on Jun 2.

On my particular bike, the crankcase is vented into the air box and coolant has a stock overflow reservoir. So, do I understand it correctly that I will only need one for the carb? Any suggestions for a quick and cheap solution?

Thanks

Get a short, clear pvc hose with a block valve on one end and feed the carb drain tubes in on the other end somehow.

Basically the same as an SME Catch can.

That is a good way to go just make sure the catch can is still vented. The catch can cant be completely water tight... if you plug off all the vent lines the carb wont work. the holes need to be on the top so that the bike would have to be completely upside down for gas to leak out...
or just get a container with a lid, drill holes to push the lines into... cheap and easy.

I thought the catch can has to be of certain decent volume?

Right. So I can get a small plastic bottle, but I was hoping someone would point me an easy way to mount the bottle at the best spot. I have seen some mounted on the left front side of the cylinder, but it's so close to the header pipe, that I am not sure it's a such a good idea. And I am not exactly looking to spend 60 bucks for a can with a bracket. If the track days will turn out to be a regular thing I don't mind, but not right now.

The vast majority of installs I have seem mount them on the left of the header.

Get a harder container that you can zip-tie to the frame somewhere. There is no minimum capacity requirement, as far as I know.

I'm going to use a small 10 oz. radio controlled airplane fuel tank, you will need the gas conversion stopper but total cost is about $8 . Drill holes so the hoses fit tightly into it and vent it to atmosphere to stop vapor lock.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I have a question about this for my bike Im setting up...And instead of starting my own thread I thought Id ask in here....My KX450F is FI so there is no carb hoses to worry about...So I only have a rad overflow and crack case breather catch can to figure out....Can I use one can for both or will that cause running problems? And can anyone suggest a nice clean can I can buy? Id prefer to buy something purpose build and clean looking....

I wouldn't worry about the crank case breather hose. No one that I race with, including me, has it going to a catch can and it's never been an issue with any race or track day organizer.

There are a variety of off the shelf catch cans that you can use for the rad overflow. I use the SM Engineering hose type mentioned above.

Where is your breather located? If mine was on the top of the engine cases or the valve cover I wouldnt think about it, but mine is on the left side engine cover which is a fairly low point. Id think at heavy lean and high RPM, or if I drop the bike on the left it might spill some oil...If its not a problem sounds good to me

I'll look into the SME catch can for the coolant

I see what you mean. Comes right on top of the crank case on the Honda (#2):

I still think you'd be ok though.

I tried to find a picture but couldn't find one but some guys have a catch can right infront of the engine behind the skid plate. It's somehow fastened between the frame there. Not sure if that pic is your actual bike but could be a nice place for a catch can. You could run your rad overflow down into the same catch can.

I know what your talking about, I have even seen some nice ones made out of carbon fiber that are built into the skid plate...That pic is of an 2010 or 2011, Mine is a 2012 but pretty much identical beside my engine plugs being blue...

That's not a bad idea, with the PVC pipes. Although the article doesn't spend much time on how exactly it is secured to the frame or the engine bracket behind. I guess he's got it safety wired. But still the proximity to the header ... I don't like it. And that's the problem with that location of DRZ400. We'll see if I can strap it elsewhere.

BTW, how much stuff will end up in the can, after a track day? Just wondering.

Most likely nothing. If you fall over then the overflow lines will drain into the can. Some bikes consistently leak - one of the regular racers with a yamaha 450 has to drain his catch can after each moto...
Once you get your catch can setup check it after a good ride and see
