Cashier or self check out?

If we're not careful, between automation and global outsourcing, we could have a huge chunk of our population equally disenfranchised and militant...

Exactly but it's going to eventually happen. What is the government plan for the inevitable?

*me standing in line*
Employee: “The self checkout is just over there.”
Me: “No thanks, I don’t work here.”
Employee: “Oh, it’s really easy!”
Me: “What’s my discount for using it?”
Employee: “....there isn’t one.”
Me: *pointing to cashier* “Then why would I do their job if I’m not compensated for it? Why are you promoting putting your co-worker out of a job?”
Employee: “...”

Two of my kids worked cash at a grocery store, one "baked" for Tim's. One of the cashiers now mixes paint. Takes a little practice, which I don't have, to find and scan the codes, then move the item out of the area. Why would I put a kid, or better yet, an older person, who wants the job out of work?

Hmm interesting topic. Myself I always go for the cashier. I always pay with cash, I don't want a bunch of change. I also don't like touching a device which has been handled constantly without cleaning, this has improved greatly with COVID though, 1+ there, but that won't last long once it's gone so will the cleanliness, (maybe some of that should stay, it's working to some level).

Also I am quite regimented about getting groceries, it isn't something I enjoy so I make it a routine, give myself time, and go at less busy times so it is less painful. As well I limit this activity to once a week and avoid going for random stuff or multiple stores, rather spend time doing other things.

What @Priller mentioned is quite interesting, how we are moving away from personal interactions to more faceless ones. Will compartmentalizing these activities be an impact on how we function in society.

From a business perspective when I think about service it is not sefl-checkouts and automation. Though useful, which is a tough call, I still believe a personal touch of some sort is more true to helping customers and being valued as one, not just a number you have been processed through a queue.

Who knows, maybe one day these dull activities will all be taken care of by some truly great automation, like a Star Trek food replicator, and we can spend time doing other more positive things, like riding more! ?‍♂️:ROFLMAO:

Depends if I have cash on me I want to get rid of (usually the case) and quite a few stores I've noticed only accept credit/debit at self checkout so I try and go to cashiers.

To the original poster, aren't the weights pretty accurate when you put your stolen item in the bagging area? ... doesn't it beep even more and say the weight of the items is off and lock up to call the attendant or not let you scan any more until the weight problem is corrected? I always get the message to put my scanned item in the bagging area.

Cash is well known to be a huge carrier of filth. That’s a strong argument against exactly what you’re doing versus touching a likely recently sanitized pin pad. Or use your bank card and tap - no contact at all. It’s only it it’s over $100 you need to enter your PIN (and you can get that adjusted higher if you want) and I guarantee in this day and age there’s a sanitizer of some sort within easy access you can ask for if you’d like to sanitize the pin pad beforehand. If it wasn’t already done.

The nobility of preserving someone’s job? A cashier? There was a time when you HAD TO have someone else fuel your vehicle. Now? 99% do it themselves.

Let’s take a moment of silence for all the lost jobs of gas jockeys.

I’m joking of course. But, there was a time when milk was delivered door to door.

There was a time when everyone went to the butcher......

Preserving cashier jobs? I shop Amazon.

It’s ok, when cashier jobs diminish there will be other things folks can do for income.

Not all machines have scales. The ones at Loblaws or Shoppers don’t require bagging.

Seems like an oxymoron?
So ok, I could have said small change, or coins, mostly coins is my issue.

Most of these self-check outs are not that sophisticated, so you could end up with $10 worth of coins instead of a 10 or 2 fives. I prefer bills not coins. I also unload my coins when I pay by rounding up the amounts between denominations to get more bills in return instead of coins. Can't do that with the machine either, I've tried.

I know ya all paying with cards must think I am crazy or something. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I only use cash when I have to or buy something big.

will launder cash for cash

I think the last time I used an ATM was over a year ago.

Withdrew $200.

As of today, I still have $160 in my wallet...

If you are good with a budget then great.

I've always taken out cash weekly for my fun budget. When it got down to the last few 20s before the weekend I start to hesitate.

Plus I honestly don't wanna use a card for a $2.50 purchase. Twonies still work.

This year is a bit different but again, self checkout is sooo easy (for me).

My local gas station still has someone pumping my gas and their price is the same as everywhere else. I go there and take advantage of the added service.
I still go to a butcher.
I still go direct to the farmers for my produce in the summer.
I try and support local shops instead of supporting an American billionaire who doesn’t care about his workers - provided I’m not paying much more than if I were to buy on Amazon.
Why are you advocating getting rid of jobs?

I agree with your approach. Support your independent grocer, pharmacy, butcher etc.

But going to Home Depot or Shoppers and taking a stand by refusing the self checkout? Sorry, I don’t subscribe to using a cashier over their self check out.

I do support local business including bike shops, the home hardware franchise and others.

But if I happen to be in a place with self check out, I’ll use it.

There are other jobs out there. I hear the government will pay for your education to become a PSW for instance. Better pay than a cashier. Is it an easy or great job? No. But there is a need.

I think if cashier jobs are eliminated, there will always be jobs in other areas. Drivers for Uber, Amazon etc. Stock clerks and warehouses.

Supporting local independent businesses is the approach I try to make.
