Cashier or self check out?

I always try to use a real live cashier unless the lines are really long. I think it of it as trying preserve someone's paycheck to paycheck job.

When I do use the self check out I usually get a "deal". If it doesn't beep when I scan it it goes in the bag anyway. If you want a cashier that cares pay them (the quality of my cashier work is equal to my cashier pay)

cashier unless only self is open. I try to be a good example by not shoplifting.

which ever check out option gets me out of the store fastest.

I enjoy paying more , for those that enjoy the fruits of "inventory shrinkage" so thanks for that....

Wasn’t expecting to get into a thread on stealing here....but for me I prefer the self checkout.

Thieves are helping prices rise and use more plastic and packaging.

@timtune the word you are looking for is ‘theft’ not ‘deal’.

In rural Manitoba 60 plus year ago at the local grocery store you went in, handed your grocery list to the owner and she picked the items off the shelve, added up the amounts, usually on a paper bag, bagged the items, you paid cash and left.

Then came self serve, you wheeled the cart full of items to a conveyor belt and someone read the price tags, entered them on a cash register, bagged the groceries, you paid cash and left. Sometimes it took a while if you happened to get a can without a price tag or there was a sale item the cashier forgot.

Then the devil took over the grocer stores. BAR CODES. Hell hath arrived. At first it was just a funny symbol on a can or box and the cashier continued to read paper labels but eventually the bar code took over. No lackey to cachika cachika cachika a little price marker to put cans on the shelf. No typing in every price manually. Yup, sometimes the shelf price disagreed with the bar code entry but what do you expect. It was just a stupid computer and everyone knows how temperamental they are.

Now the swing is to self check out. It's called evolution.

The cashier's paycheck doesn't come out of the store owner's pocket. It comes out of the shopper's pocket as did the shelf stocker, label placer etc.

Eventually every third shopper will be issued fluffy slippers so they can eliminate the floor cleaner.

My wife is an absolute Luddite and has used self check out for years. I'm following in her footsteps.

Self-checkout. Or even better - self checkout using the app on my phone.

And no "deals". Actually I had a few times when I forgot to scan something - so I paid for those items on my next visit.

Never, ever self-checkout. If it's the only option, I just leave the items.

First off, entry level work is being chipped away at so many levels in Canada, and instead of paying a wage the money goes to some POS manufacturer out of country. We certainly don't see any savings as a shopper.

Secondly, the bloody things eff up all the time ("Please place the item in the bagging area." "It is in the f*****g bagging area!") requiring someone to come over and reset the item, at which point you might as well have just checked out regularly without the wait.

Thirdly, we're already so much more isolated from one another in our communities than we used to be. Engaging with others on a day-to-day basis is so important to maintain a sense of empathy for our fellow citizens, and I think that's slowly being eroded by a sense of selfishness ("Why should I pay more taxes for someone else's kids to get a quality education?") or paranoia ("Everyone on government benefits is a lazy bum stealing from me as a taxpayer!"). Having a chat with a cashier is just a small step in engaging with a stranger on a human level.

Big stuff, I know, but this whole 'anonymous Amazon delivery' world we now live in has lots of consequences that I think we have barely begun to understand...

Cashier.

It's bad enough I have to walk all over the store picking up the items...now you want me to scan each item, put it in bags AND pay for it....NOPE!

I'll use self checkout if the cashier is busy. I prefer people over machines which is why I refuse to use a drive through service as well. Ghastly option.

Wonder if there is a correlation to drive through and self checkout but that's another thread.

Whatever gets me the fak outta there the fastest. Often times, that's self checkout.

And it also keeps the self checkout employee employed lol. Especially now that a lot of them end up wiping them after each customer. I also now know by heart that bananas are 4011.

1-3 items: self-checkout
more than 3 items: cashier

Cute cashier girl: 1-any items.
A cute cashier decided to flirt with me recently, she thought I was a newly released felon, I decided to play along for the lulz

She gave me her number

They love the bad boys

Not sure if I should be flattered or offended

Sigh... I miss being single

In the last year order online have them bring to my truck, before cashier unless 1-2 items, I am not interested in being my own cashier.

It's a bit of a misnomer that every self checkout reduces one job.

I have a friend who works at a massive Dollarama who installed self checkouts a year or so ago. There was rumours of course someone would get laid off. Never happened - the employees that would have been on till just got reassigned stocking shelves and maintaining the store instead.

And people maintain those machines too. A (now ex, unfortunately) friend works for the company that fixes them when they bork up. He's a very busy guy and there's an army of them out there.

If you're upset about self checkouts, ask yourself if you use ATM's, pump your own gas, ever used an automated phone system, dialed your own phone number instead of asking an operator to connect you, got upset when a machine reset the pins at the bowling alley instead of a pinsetter employee.....etc etc etc ad infinitum.

Depends on the store. Walmart... i self checkout, Longos, ill go to a cashier, Shoppers Cashier, Ikea self checkout. Usually corresponds to how long the line up is for the cashiers.
