Hey anyone know of a good place to get car tires from in the Buffalo area? Tires and installation. Just wondering if there are savings to be had by driving across the border.

Definately, I buy my tires from Cole Muffler shop (just bought out by Mavis Tire) right in Niagara Falls, NY about 5 mins from the boarder and down the street from the outlet stores. Prices are dirt cheap and they even give you a better price than the online price sometimes when you tell them you are from Canada.

I drove over, got winter tires installed in 08 when Canada had a winter tire shortage. I drove on them 3 years straight in all seasons and I still have 75% thread left on them. My girl did the same thing, I only spent $330USD or so for all four tires and its actually cheaper when you convert it to CAD.

Cheaper - yes

but you risk getting burned at the border... if you're hit with duty/taxes it works out the same...

i've heard both stories, some get them across with no fees, others have to pay...

personally i buy my tires at costco...

tire price is about the same like everywhere else, except they do lifetime rotation/balancing and fill the tires with nitrogen and free flat repair...
most other places might rotate your tires, but will not balance them...

that to me is worth the extra $$ rather then going over the border

just to clarify, I drive over with my worn out crappy tires, get new ones installed and drive back over. Their price includes everything, installation, balancing, tire disposal, those plug thingys.....everything.

And while I'm waiting they drive me to Applebys up the street for lunch and then they pick me up when my car is done.

They are located

I use Bailey's Tire in Buffalo.

Family owned, great service, great prices and very close to the border!

Tell them you are cdn, and you get an extra discount!

9 out of 10 vehicles in the place have Canadian plates.

How they catch you now is some of the tires have a green line in the tread that wear out after 2000k. As before you have tires installed which brands don't have it.

How can they prove you didn't install them in Canada a day or two before then?

Number 1, They can give you a hard time for one ...

Number 2, they can slap you for the duty / tax charge and you say I bought it in Canada. They'll tell you to bring your receipt in and we'll refund you the taxes you paid. What would you say then ? No ? ... Personally this scenario has happened to me before. But for me, I did actually have a receipt at home and I got my money back (it was for a set of rims)

Personally, I get them delivered via TireRack, then I bring them back AND I DECLARE THEM, then I have them mounted / balanced here. Sure it costs about 80-100 more after taxes, but I still saved 200 bucks on top of that !!!

+1 for Bailey's Tire. I bought my winter tires there 2 seasons ago, installed, drove back. they even cleaned the rims so it doesn't look like finger prints everywhere. but make sure you call and make an appointment ahead of time.

Just emailed them for a quote.

I'm still comparing prices with Costco and a local tire place in Brantford. Dealership wanted $180 installed/tire for ContiPros which aren't that impressive imho. Since I already have winter tires, I would prefer some summers. Also still looking at TireRack.

On that topic, anyone have any suggestions on some good summer tires? VW Jetta TDI 205 55 R16 btw so not looking for extreme performance if you know what I mean. More interested in good wet handling and quiet over performance.

I am very happy with Michelin Pilot A/S, but I am also so impressed with winter Dunlop WinterSport M3 (compared to Michelin Pilot Alpin) that my next set of summer tires will be from Dunlop too.

These are $168 at Costco for my size. I was also looking at the Michelin Primacy MXV4 - $175 installed at Costco vs a bargain of $207 from the dealer. Of course the Yokohama Avid TRZ seems to popular base on some feedback that I've read. About $100 at tirerack or mavis tire.

Decisions decisions....

Good thing I have some time to replace them.

@ Hammer - Membership does have its advantages...

In fact the Michelin Primacy MXV4 cost $122 to ship from Tirerack, putting the cost about the same as Costco installed.

According to Mavis online quotes, these same tires are $172 installed, also about the same as Costco. I suppose I could have Tirerack ship them to buffalo and drive them back, would save me the $122 shipping and taxes at the border would be on a smaller sum. But then factor in $15-$25 to balance & install per tire and the savings keep burning up.

I just picked the Primacy so I'd be able to compare apples to apples. I'll keep looking at other tires and comparing. But so far I'm not seeing any super huge savings out there.

just remember Mavis usually gives you an additional $10 off the online price when you say you're canadian.
