Car backed into and dumped my bike just now - what to do?

They picked it back up and it's got some damage, the left handle is slightly bent (any idea the cost?) but not too bad. Some cosmetic stuff. But I didn't really know who to call? I called the police and they said if it's over $1000 damage you have to report it. I said, "it's a hit and run", but the guy said no one will come to look, you have to take it in. Or not, he said. If your insurance requires you to report it, you'd better report it. It started, so I drove home. I contacted my insurance company and said "what's my next move?". I think I need to have it thoroughly gone over. It didn't start right away, and not every time since either.

Does anyone know the proper way to deal with this, for now, and/or in the future?

And oh yeah, if anyone hears about some idiot in a pickup truck (white) dumping a bike at Danforth and Woodbine today at 4:30, let me know.

Nothing you can do. Same thing happened to my gf last year. We even got footage of the jackass hitting her bike. Called the police, police, surprisingly, showed up. Took statements, left and said they'd investigate. I was 99% sure the police wouldn't do **** so pressured the plaza management to get me the footage. Eventually we got it...couldn't see the plate clearly (****** camera).

In the end, my gf paid for around $500 in parts from Kawasaki. I'm really sorry to hear of your situation.

Google search the local accident report center in your area, and bring the bike there and fill out an accident report....Then call your insurance if you plan to claim the damage, they will tell you to take it to a shop for a quote. Once you bring it to a shop the insurance company sends an adjuster there to compare their quote with the shops quote, if the shop is within their rage they give the go ahead to fix it...If its too much they either request another shop to quote it, or its over the reasonable cost of repair for the value of the bike and they write it off and pay you out...

If the damage is less than $1k don't claim it because you will be "charged" with a collision in the eyes of the insurance company.
Unless you have the plates and or witness then you are SOL.

I would find out the damage first before going to the collision reporting centre.

You have to make up your mind about that pretty soon, as I believe the law states you are to report a collision within 48 hours.

if you have footage of the truck hitting the bike and knocking it over, you shouldn't really be negatively affected from an insurance premium increase perspective and you shouldn't have to pay your deductible either

let us know how it works out

you also have deductible to pay, depending how much, but still not worth to claim through insurance if the damage is not huge.

+1
Get other guy's insurance info. Report to your insurance, they will do the rest

How do you know it was this white truck that you asked about? Are there witnesses that failed to get a plate number?

If you tell your insurance company that you came back and found your bike like that, couldn't the claim be made under comprehensive insurance?

I once had a car hit (and totalled) while parked. I had liabilty coverage only but somehow I still got paid for the car from State Farm and it didn't affect my rates at all since the car was parked with no one in it when it was hit.

You should have coverage for damage by an unidentified or uninsured motorist. It makes sense to me that there would have to be a corresponding police report, to reduce the likelihood of someone claiming damage from dropping it themselves.

My friend owns the state farm. I'm calling tomorrow to see what's best to do. Was thinking I would take it to a shop and get a quick estimate, and if it IS over $1000, taking it to the collision centre. Hopefully this is legal.

Just file a collision report first man..

just looked over my state farm policy and there is a "Section 5: Uninsured Automobile" premium so I'm guessing you will be covered under that part of the policy

just make sure to take the video evidence with you when filling out the police report, maybe they can do some CSI **** and get the license plate #

There's no reason not to file a report. I was "kissed" by a transport truck on the 401 years ago and went to report it. I never called my insurance company, but a few days later they called me. They asked it I was filing a claim and I said to them in absolute plain English that I would not be filing a claim and I reported it to hopefully do something to the stupid truck that hit me. He only pushed in my mirror on my chevette, so it wasn't a huge deal, except for the idiot not being able to drive properly.

If you already mentioned to your insurance company that you had your vehicle hit, they may put that on your record and re-evaluate your premiums irrespective of whether you make a claim or not.

wideiris, sorry to hear about the hit.
It's all depends on damages the bike sustained. If I were you, however, I would absorb the expences and fix it myself without having the insurance company involved at all. They look at 'hit and run' as a collision. You don't want that appearing on your record, trust me. Also your deductable will kick in. Not worth it.
