Canadian knife laws

as long as it's not concealed on your body and stored in your truck, I don't see what the LEGAL problem is...

...but customs guys have some pretty crazy powers of search and detention.

As for carrying a sword. Again, nothing legally against it, but the police will likely charge you with something and let the court figure it out. And punish you by "inconveniencing" you, like they did to this guy:

I have a Kukri as well, Don't really like the handle. The regular Bolo has a much better handle and more forward weight. Good steel .. Holds a edge well.. I sharpen them razor sharp with a 4000 grit Japanese wetstone. Cold Steel makes good knives.. Well they did when they were made in the USA,, Don't know how they are now.. I have a US Made Recon Tanto and a SRK.

The 18" Ontario Machettes are great as well, They'll slice clean through a 2" maple branch in one swing when I'm clearing trails

Some of the cold steel stuff is made in south africa now. Quality has gone down as a result. The promotional videos that they put out (avail on youtube) are pretty entertaining hahah.

I keep a 13" kukri near my bed...you know...for the zombies.

I carried a samurai sword down bloor street once. It was just a display sword with a crappy, unsharpened blade. The cop that eventually stopped me said he was "getting complaints". From who...i'm not sure...but i definitely won't be trying that again.
 
I've got a katana, 4 machetes, a 6 inch hunting knife, a 5 inch 'sport' knife (good for filets and various other camping needs) and several smaller ones.

Knives rule!

haha so true. My little brother called one american boarder guard a 'Grocery Cop' and said 'you wish you were me' when they were hassling him about coming back into the states after his leave (USMC special forces). It was funny afterward but me and my wife just put our heads down and layed low as they went at it a little. In the end nothing happened but I was sure we were going to be hauled in. I'm so glad his paper work had some important signatures on it cause that saved our *****.


Oh and back on topic. Knives rule!

This section always made me nervous. Just about any folding knife can be opened "by centrifugal force" if you give it a hard enough flick. I've got a beautiful little Benchmade with a nifty locking mechanism that could easily fall into this description:

Plus I noted in there it said if it can be opened with one hand - Most knives you buy have a little knob that you can push your thumb against. I can flick open most of my knives with one hand.

Its probably written vague on purpose so that they can apply it to almost any knife if so desired. If I ever get questioned about my pocket knife on my belt (I usually carry a nice CRKT folder when in the field) I always make sure to refer to it as a tool and only refer to work purposes. Never mention self defence as it becomes a weapon then in some officers eyes.

I have a nice benchmade automatic at home but I never take it out cause it doesn't even come close to something I could argue as legal. Beautiful knife though.
 
I usually have a really small knife on me most of the time (my friends are usually shocked when I tell them I don't have one when they ask), all my bigger ones are for camping and such.

I had a cop ask to see one of my knives during a traffic stop once. I had it tucked in one of the cubby holes. Glanced at it and handed it back, didn't seem to care at all. Just a little 3 inch folding blade.

He was actually more suspicious and questioning about my camera gear on the front seat.
 
Some of my favorite knives are the cheapest. the Opinel:

They're cheap, light, and functional and as such are the perfect camping knife. The carbon blade is just the right shape and easily takes a crazy sharp edge. I just wish they offered a plastic or metal handle, as the wood handles tend to swell when the humidity rises which makes the knife sticky to open.

Some of the customs agents are real dull (excuse the pun) when it comes to what is allowed and not allowed into the country. Mainly because there's just too many techanicalities. They just try to play hardball but I found that if you printed out the research and show them 75% of the time they'll verify and let you through. The other 25% of the time they'll just say that they have the final say and you have to surrender your stuff.
 
What's the deal with straight razors, by the way? Most of the ones I pick up at antique shops can be opened with centrifugal force. Once I tighten them, it's not an issue, but am I technically carrying an illegal weapon while I'm transporting them home? The really stupid part is that (once restored) I am actually using them for shaving lol
 
Honestly canadian knife laws are a joke in canadian law "a knife that opens by centrifugal force" is considered illegal!:( Common people why are we putting up with this? every pocket knife ever made is opened this way . the laws are wrote this way so by discretion any prosecuter in any court of the crown can charge whomever they want, this law needs to be amended. Though most cops on the street here in victoria b.c. use discretion and rarely charge you if the blade is not concealed this still leaves way to much open to interpretation. And also as previously stated there is no size restriction i have knifes that are machete size HUGE almost like swords and its fine as long as there in my house or property, just be carefull how you transport they must be in view to an officer if your moving them.

I know what you mean. I have 4 kukris (2 CS, 1 Ontario, and one from napal), 40+ Throwing knifes, 2 gi Tantos, 2 emperial katanas from Cold steel, etc. Nothing Illegal, but I do have a lot of Bali's in Cebu.

But man do I use all of them. 1 day arnis, 1 day kali, and one day Laido!
 
Nothing illegal about it....

Knives can also be concealed as well, which is extremely common when it comes to pocket knives. Flick knives, butterfly knives and some others are prohibited by code....and no knife can be concealed if its intended to be used as weapon....at least not legally.

I believe the difference between a straight razor is that you have to hold it open.
As well with "flick" knives you still have to use your thumb to provide the initial push.

It is completely a technicality. I love butterfly knives and I wanted one to practise tricks with. I would never bring it outside or use it for anything but it got stopped at the border and confiscated. I didn't bother trying to argue it was for collection purposes.
