Canadian Forces

Check your dates and I think you'll find you were with us in Zgon for 04/05!

Glad you had a good go with us, we had a bit of a rough go due to our CO.

Att'd to HQ?

Yea RCD BG HQ Roto 13

I remember working with a Captain Angel and MWO Bezeau (sp?) <-- is Chief of 1 Div HQ now.

04/05 it was.

EDIT: Personal weapon was the 7.62mm FNC1 semi-auto rifle until it was replaced with the 5.56mm C7 semi-auto rifle.

That's going back a ways - FN C1 A1 - helluva a satisfying kick to those.
Lighter toys in my short time were the Stirling SMG and 9mm Browning.
Heavier was the old John Wayne stuff: .30 and .50 Brownings, Carl Gustav, M74 LAWS, etc. Driving a Lynx full time on a two week exercise, deuce & 1/2, 3/4
Looking back and comparing with guys in other regiments, apparently armored reconnaisance reserves were exposed to a varied education (or the others forgot half of what they were taught by the time I asked them). I was always conscious of the fact guys my age south of the border were doing it for real in Vietnam and I was playing silly bugger on weekends.

Oooohhh!!! Two of my favourite toys that I had rare opportunities to play with. Last time I fired the 9mm Browning was in '95 when I was the RSO for an EME PH IV Officer course in CFB Borden. Beautiful little pistol, despite its age. The Sterling SMG was phased out of service during the early 80's when I was stationed in Germany. Had a Cpl from a British Infantry unit, who had a few tours in Ireland under his belt, teach me how to house-clear with it; simply take a 20' length of para cord and tie a slip knot around the trigger, then toss it through the window and yank on the cord. Very effective.

But my all time fave gun was the 155mm M109 Self Propelled Howitzer. Once you've pulled the lanyard on one of those and sent a 90lb bullet on a 4km ballistic arc to an impact area where it obliterated everything within a 50m radius, your wish list is pretty much crossed off.

When I first got in it was the FN, SMG and Hi-Power. I liked them so much I bought my own FN (Aussie L1A1 then Canadianized it) and Hi-Power (Dutch version). I got rid of them when the laws got stupid.

LOL Roto 13 was 03/04 dude... I thought I was losing my **** there but I dug up my tour/LTA pics and they are all dated from then.

Anyways,

There have been rumors of bringing something like the FN back into service. FN SCAR-H or Knights Armament SR-25.

Also trials for new sidearms to replace the Browning HP's. For some reason it's not as simple as just using the Sig Sauer's we already have and issue to SOFCOM and Close protection teams....

I fired the M-109 when I was at 2RCHA. Always amazed me how little room there was when that block recoiled and came back within inches of you as you stand there squished against the back. We gave those up to 1CMBG ~ ten years ago the same time the RCD gave up the Leopards and we "light rolled".

Agree with the "once you pull that lanyard" it kinda kills everything else. Putting a three round bust out of a LAV at night is a close second tho.

I do love the Sigs. Standard issue still being the Browning HP which I agree still does the job we need it to but compared to what some of the allies were using, I wouldn't mind a change. The Slovaks used a really nice 9mm. I wish I could remember what it is and I am too lazy to punch it into google. I worked with those guys and an American team. On an off day we went to the range in KAF and tested each others side arms. Loved that Slovak gun. It used the .380 ACP which kept it lighter and shorter which I tend to favor. Though it wasn't aesthetically 'nice' as what a couple of the Americans were using, I still liked it best.

You went over with 2 Horse? If that's the case you may have known my 2 close friends.

Hasn't the SCAR-H become standard for the US yet? I remember they were trying to make it standard issue in the US

I was @ 2 Horse when I went on tour with RCD. Never did a tour with them, just a DART. I was posted to 2 RCHA HQ BTY from 2001-2005 so if there were there then, I might know them.

It's one of their rifles (Rangers and SOCOM use it) but they still use the 5.56 M16 and M4 CAR as "standard" weapons. They are also trialing replacements but spending billions on developing something even though they also use the H&K 416.

Couple of failed prototypes that almost made the cut came out for testing but were scrapped due to weight.

Personally I would just got with 416 and 417's and call it a day.

Wow, thats gun porn right there, lol. Totally customizable, I vote for that rather than the SCAR. Does that have a flip up iron sight too?

I wonder if that is available for civilian use?

There are civilian versions of those in semi auto. MR556 and MR762. Close to but not exactly like them.

They cost around ~ $4000 here

I don't think I could afford that anytime soon

Oh, it's become a gun nut thread. Personally I have had no use for fire arms since I signed out. I couldn't even tell you which way the safety is on a hunting rifle, only on anything I was specifically trained on. Many years later a widow showed me the medal and citation story regarding her dear departed husband. As I read it from the table in front of me, my hands were mindlessly disassembling his 9mm Browning. When I finished reading, here is this treasured heirloom in pieces on the coffee table and I didn't know what I'd just done or if I could put it back together. Everyone else was too busy yacking to notice what I'd done so I just read the citation again and presto! my hands put the piece together again beautifully. Now that's training. Same should be said for my riding skills but I'm not there yet.

For modern firearms, the red dot means "its hot".

If u can't see the red dot, its safe ;)

Wasnt in the Canadian Forces but did my time in the ADF. While travelling around the world a few years back spent a bit of time in northern France through the Somme region. Saw a lot of war cemeteries with Canadian and Aussie graves side by side. Still fighting side by side nearly 100yrs later in Afghanistan etc. Lest We Forget.

The gats we used while I served...

Those AUGs look so odd in person, but look lighter than ours.
Top one of your three is our C-6... It's uh.... "fun"
Glad I'm not carrying it around... Instead, I get to haul a damn clinic on my back! Anyone want a fentanyl lollipop?!

Changing mags feels very natural after a little while with the Aug. I really liked the feel and weight of it too. Mind you the diggers that were around pre 1988 didnt really like them. They missed the punch of the SLR the Aussie army used previously.

The Mag58 is a great bit of kit, Canadian forces call it a C-6? They are a heavy pig but great to have in your section. Saw an episode of Red Jacket the other day and they were mounting one to a chopper with an awesome stand that had gyro stabilizers etc on it.

Well apparently I've got to read more closely! I had it in my head that you were talking about UNPROFOR... a decade earlier! I got out in 2001 and you're right, SFOR Roto 13 WAS 03/04.
