Canada Post - Huge losses

He's pretty dumb. The smart(er) ones fill it out at the front door after knocking.
I fill mine out in the depot every day, especially in the winter. I’ve had pens freeze, the adhesive on the not sticking because it’s too cold etc. Apply them when they’re warm, they stick. Besides, putting down mail bundles, having to write out the card, wait for person is just a pain in the ass. I ring the doorbell, pull out the package, scan the bar code. Count to 30. If no movement in house, drop card and go.

And for those of you who don’t know, we now have to carry these carded items around with us for the of the day. A serious pain. I’ve had 11 items in my bag, filling about half of one side, simply because people weren’t home. Got to the point I left them in a relay box and completed my route. Instead of heading directly back to the depot with the taxi, I went to the box first, retrieved the items and then back to depot.

Me, I wouldn’t mind going back to the Covid years procedure - everything that required a signature or customs got carded and the person had to go pick it up at the retail outlet. Nobody complained about that. It’s not so bad for posties with a van, as they don’t physically have to carry these items 20-25k a day because somebody wasn’t home. They can just drop it in their van.

I've had mixed results from CPC. My normal postie is really good. I rarely need stuff to the door as superbox is sufficient but when required he comes and rings bell. Most of the subdivision got registered letters one time and that was a no knock, no ring situation. Stickers on the doors, no answer pick it up yourself tomorrow (I was home, no ring, no knock, no waiting). Not sure if it was the same guy or if they had a special carrier for that abnormal situation.

That makes sense, if the customer is not home and the carrier actually has the package. In the case of the video this carrier had the slips pre-filled out and left the package(s) in the van. He is not dumb, he's lazy and got caught...
That makes sense, if the customer isn't recording their doorway.

Always fill it out in the doorway after knocking, if you have to make a second trip to the van and they are actually home, so be it. He pre filled it out and still tried to play the odds on camera, that to me = dumb.

Yeah foot routes deal with different things, I typically do 1 lap with letter mail and packets, if I noted who has parcels I'll give a knock while i'm lapping. Then I go back and get parcels, knock on the door and fill out the DNC. If you haven't come to the door by the time I'm done I card it and move on.

No one wants to spend an hour driving to get their parcel because the postie didn't want to bring it.

Imo, walk through apartments are the worst. Especially if the super or security won't put an elevator on service for the parcels. Half the mail slots are blocked, or have crap in them, or are some bizarre design that requires both hands to actuate. Hate it.

For me, it doesn’t matter if they’re recording their doorway. I count to 30 seconds before leaving. probably a slow count that is closer to 45 seconds.

But yes, he just dropped the card and left. bad idea.

How hard was the slap on the wrist in his case?

Would would you guys expect it to be?

I get it. I truly do. It’s also the most frustrating thing in the job aside from junk mail.
We carry the stuff. I deliver about 10-15% of signature items, as people aren’t home. On an average day I have 7-12 signature items. On average I deliver 1 or 2. The rest get carded.

I bring the package to the door. Nobody can say otherwise. if they have video, I don’t care. I wait a decent amount of time. Then I have to tote the packet around the rest of the day.

It depends on how many complaints he has been found guilty of in the past.
If it’s his first time, likely a 3 day suspension without pay. If it’s his second, a week suspension without pay. Beyond that, likely a termination.

Hmmm. More than I expected.
I thought it would have been formality talk with the supervisor.

Another very sorry we got caught. That happens every day.
Got one of those Tuesday.

Went to the post office today, lady tells me the driver doesn’t always drop off the parcels, try again tomorrow.

Mine is a small packet international, no signature reqd, a 4”x4” mirror glass for my car. I have a super mailbox, wife said the driver was in a small brown cargo van.

If there is not a safe space (too visible from the sidewalk/road) etc, we are not to leave packages even if there's no signature required. You can request that it be left at the front/side door regardless, it's called 'Safe Drop'.

I assume 'super mailbox' means it could have fit? If so, that's lame.

Things may not always be available at/after 1pm the next business day, depends on when the driver makes it back to the depot and then when there is an RPO run setup. Not all drivers go to the local RPO to drop off before clocking out. I do my best to be honest with the pickup hours, if it's gonna be a late return I tell you to go after 6/7pm, that gives the afternoon guys time to get it there on their usual runs.

For me it's one of those "I never thought about that things".

Face it. It's not 1957 anymore and June Cleaver isn't home all day.

Just an FYI - Amazon just upped there package tracking game. At least I just noticed this.
When you check tracking it tells you how many stops and where they are in terms of location, with location marked on the map.
Pretty neat.

There's a ***HUGE*** push for compliance due to current CP/Union lockout/strike posturing and negotiations going on.
CP likes to wield a stick, but never a carrot if you get my point.

It's all about metrics to CP and the management. We did XYZ. Here, we can prove it on paper. Doesn't matter how much of a gong show it is, the metrics say it's good.

The deciding factor in the 3 day suspension would be the video footage from the client. Can't dispute that. *IF* there was no footage, postie could say, "Hey, I knocked. Maybe they didn't hear it." At that point it's a he/she said this that or the other thing. We'd get a talking to from the supervisor, but that's about it.

Only six of them though. Barely a toe dip. The results will be interesting. If they order no more, that's a huge slap in the face for canoo. If they order thousands, GOEV could spike.
As for the new vehicles in the USA...
We've got about 6 of the new Ford truck based right hand drive vans in our depot. They've put in some really slick racks and easy delivery systems. Unfortunately, we've had 2 posties locked out of their vans, on route. Key doesn't work. Fob doesn't work. Electrical issues. Both ended up having to call a supervisor, who came out with another van, transfer mail/parcels over and continue. A huge delay. Sigh.

Pretty sad for brand spanking new vehicles with less than 200km on them.

That has been a thing for a small number of last mile delivery companies for a year or so. I've only had it live on a few select orders.

Not sure if allowed or not.. but if we're expecting something.. I'll leave a vehicle in the driveway unlocked.. they put it in and lock it.

The super mailbox is 60m from my house, it will fit a motorcycle helmet. This package should be smaller than 10"x10" x2" -- it's the glass for a Transit Connect sideview mirror. Another option would be to have left it in our conventional mailbox, it's big, and beside the doorbell. I never removed it hoping someday I'd have letter carrier service restored to my house.
