Bye bye JT….

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out…

About 3 years too late. Let’s see if he resigns immediately or ‘I won’t run in the next election’.
Either way we're screwed. Four month leadership race. Libs can't chance a non-confidence vote so they will prorogue before one could possibly happen. Government will be out for at least three months (assuming he prorogues wednesday and parliament wasn't planning on returning until end of month). I suspect they will try to prorogue for longer to give the new lib leader time to gain public eyes using taxpayer money. He gives zeros f^*&^s about us or the damage caused by trump incoming with no sitting canadian parliament.

He won't resign immediately, that would rush the Liberals to an interim leader. Lame duck PM which would probably still fold when the house sits. Then they have to run the leadership race (or not) before the election? Their best chance is to suspend parliament and have a more detailed leadership run. Then dissolve parliament to save face and call and election.

Legally it cannot.
Did his stupid two week extension (to secure lib pensions) actually become law or was it just more stupidity? I think worst case is the two-week extension, second-worst is mandatory date during diwali. Realistic in light of libs only caring about libs and not citizens will be April or May. If they cared about citizens we could have an early feb election (36 days required from call to vote).

So who’s next? carbon Carney?
Almost zero chance imo. It will be a massacre. Those that run have zero chance (high probability they don't even win their seat yet alone a party with even a tiny bit of power). Some of the lib royalty may run as if you are going to be canned anyway, you might as well give yourself access to the huge slush fund to blow on your way out.

Are there even any decent Lib candidates?
Imo, not really. From G&M:
"Liberal candidates who are possible leadership contenders: Ms. Freeland, Mr. LeBlanc, former housing minister Sean Fraser, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Transport Minister Anita Anand, former central banker Mark Carney and former B.C. premier Christy Clark.

Polls over the past year have shown the Conservatives with a double-digit advantage over the governing Liberals. An Angus Reid survey, released Friday, suggests that under Mr. Trudeau, the Liberals only have the support of 13 per cent of voters, but those numbers do change if a new leader is in place.

If Ms. Freeland were to take over, 21 per cent of voters would cast a ballot for the Liberals, the highest number among the leadership candidates tested."

All of the ministers are poisoned by association. Christy clark maybe but the rest of canada doesn't have much of an opinion on her. Carney is too smart to jump in now. He may take a swing in four years. Bloc will be official opposition in every case (which is insanity, a federal party with any power should have to have MP's in the majority of the country).

didn't that need royal assent? since the Cons filibustered way back in the fall nothing has been getting done.

I hope so that would kill the capital gains changes.

That's probably already DoA. Cons will just go right back to blocking everything as soon as parliament sits. Only thing that will get through is the confidence motion.

Also means the increases to dental care and pharma? Will die in the window as well.

Last I heard, Revenue Canada was still planning on enforcing the changes, even though it never passed.

Can't enforce something that's not actual legislation. Do they need legislation to make such a change to the program? That is the question.

Nope, if people expect to see positive long term changes in a short period of time, they're fooling themselves. It'll just be a new person digging a new hole by filling in the old one...
