Buying A Bike, What Are #1, #2 & #3 Steps ?

Arent all VINs 17 characters for the last many years? How did this get registered with a 16 character VIN? Isnt the last number a checksum? Obviously MTO is not bothering to have the computer check the thing that was included in the Vin to make sure that it is entered properly. Facepalm.

Or something is stolen. Innisfil has been a hotbed of stolen stuff lately. Good luck.
Naw, it would had come back stolen during the UVIP search and when the MTO issued the ownership on my name.

No, the ownership has 17 characters but the actual engraved VIN on the chassis of the bike only has 16. I just double checked. I'm going to give my insurance company the VIN on the bike maybe that will fix the problem.

weird story

MTO has the wrong VIN on file? not enough digits?
somehow in this day and age I'm surprised their system would allow that entry

and the shop that wrote the safety also effd it up?
tech writing the cert is required to take the VIN off the tag on vehicle
wondering if this was a desk-only safety?

OP, if you ever have a claim that needs adjusted
and the tag on vehicle doesn't match the policy
bingo! no soup for you!

edit: just re-read that
VIN engraved in the chassis has the wrong # of digits
Isn't this a 2015 bike?
what happened to the SN plate??

sounds to me like someone removed a digit and chiseled the plate off
why would anyone do that??

Would be interesting to see a picture of the frame with the VIN

All VINs since 1980 are 17 characters. This is carved in stone. There are no exceptions. Any more or less suggests a VIN which has been tampered with.

Triple check the VIN on the bike.

I don't think there is an expiry on the UVIP, just safety. I sold a bike I had a UVIP with it for at least half a year and I didn't hear anything about it from the buyer.

I checked and you are correct. That bothers me in that an unscrupulous seller could get a UVIP and then get a lien on the vehicle.

To be fair, they could do that in hours. I'm not sure how prevalent vehicle collateral loans are in Canada but they are popular in at least some parts of the US.

That would encourage me to get my own UVIP as I transfer the bike. But by then the seller has the money. Paranoia.

Okay guys, everything has been fixed now. The VIN on the chassis has a "dash" - between the 16 numbers, but the MTO prints that "dash" as a "4" my insurance company told me. Their printers don't have the "-" dash? Anyways, thats what my insurance told me and that was the misunderstanding.

I can breathe with relief now, my new (2017) bike is truly mine now without worries of liens or tampered VIN's. I apologized to the seller because I was starting to send him nasty text messages that he sold me a bike with a lien

That's exactly it, with exactly that same stock, the only difference is that mine is in the basement and this image is from Google.

So, bringing back from the dead an old post.

I'm most likely going to purchase a second bike this weekend. It will be my first time buying from a private seller. I purchased my Tiger from GP because I find it confusing how things work in a private sale. However, reading this post helped me clarify some things.
all the insurance needs is a VIN
they will give you a binder - send them a copy of ownership later
you'll need the signed ownership and the UVIP
go to SO, get your plate with a 10 day temp reg on it
ride bike away, get certified, go back to SO and get your perm reg

Fortunately, the seller offered to use one of his CCA tows to get the bike to my home because I have no car and no friends with pickup trucks ( or any friends IRL here, anyway).

However I still have some questions:
1) Is there a way to check if a bike is stolen? Would this appears in the UVIP? In Mexico it is a common thing to pay for a report from the Federal Police to check if the bike has a stolen report.
2) Do I need to run a personal property lien search even if the UVIP shows that there are zero liens registered to the vehicle?
3) The UVIP shows the bike was registered in Nova Scotia in 2021. Is there also a stigma for motorcycles from Nova Scotia that are similar to bikes that have been previously registered/ridden in Quebec?
4) I didn't want to give away the model, but in a previous Monster 1200 that I checked, the VIN was shown on a sticker on the frame. In the bike that I checked today, there was no sticker on either side of the frame. Do you know any other place in the motorcycle where I should look for the VIN, I want to make sure it matches to the UVIP

1) cpic search Vin for stolen Search vehicles - Canadian Police Information Centre

2) it would be rare that uvip is clean and there is a lien on it. That is more common is US where they hand out title loans like candy

3)not that I know of. It sounds like you have an ontario uvip. I would hope it shows if it is branded.

4) normally on head tube (vertical red tube in your pic between the fork legs). Need to move your head and the bars around to get an angle where you can read it without obstructions.

If you need help getting the bike, just let me know.

VIN is stamped into the head tube as @GreyGhost said.
A UVIP will tell you all you need to know. If it was registered here legally..... you have no issues with a branded title.

Thank you so much, I genuinely appreciate it. I'll take care of the final details (maintenance and service records) and will reach out to you if I need any assistance

*If it was plated here.*

I think you are able to get an ownership for a branded bike but not able to plate it.
UVIP says brand: NONE. So, I guess I'm good.

I also have a trailer and means to tow it.
Happy to help as well.

Thank you all so much for the pieces of advice. The seller arranged to tow the bike to my place for free, which was a huge help.

Now, I need to do all the SO stuff (registration, safety certificate, etc). After that, I'll be on the hunt for some affordable winter storage since my landlord is only allowing one bike in the backyard for the time being. The best deal I've seen is $400 + taxes for all winter. So, if you know of a better place, shoot a message to your guy; I don't mind if it's outside the city, as long as I can take the GO on my way back.

@Soulcatcher668 @oioioi , I really appreciate your offers to help out. Next time we're at burger night, let me treat you to food, drinks or whatever you'd like.
