Broken spool tabs from exhaust hitting not covered under warranty on Brand new bike!

Hey everyone,

so a buddy of mine bought a brand new 2011 Z1000 a couple of months ago.

He went back to the same dealership to buy spools (with framesaver pucks attached) a couple of weeks after buying the bike.

He realized last week that his exhaust was bottoming out onto the spool sliders. The tab that the slider screws into has broken the welds and is just hanging there.

He went back to the dealership, and they say it's his fault and not covered under warranty. Supposedly it happens all the time...

He bought the bike new, and bought the sliders from the same dealership. No one ever told him something like this was likely to happen...

Is there anything he can do? Or is he at fault because it's an aftermarket part?

Any and all advice welcome.

This damage was caused because the stock exhaust doesent provide adequate clearance for swingarm spools?

It might be cheap to have it tig welded back in place.

He may have had a leg to stand on if the dealership installed them too.

But i'd guess they'd say that installations require you to check for clearance before you start riding....

SA spools are overrated unless you actually need them.. Have the metal smoothed out (remove the broken tabs) and repaint the section.

Im going to assume that theyre universal fit, so not model specific & theyre not oem so kawis not on the hook, or the manufacturer... It sounds like the owner of the bike installed them..

So you're saying that because of the rear suspension movement, the spool broke off because it kept hitting the exhaust? The dealer is correct.... his fault.... or the spool supplier's fault if you want. The OEM has nothing to do with it.

BTW, he might want to make sure they don't eat up ground clearance too. I've seen spools sliders that were the first thing to touch the ground (even before pegs).... that is a crash waiting to happen.
