bp goes adv

Thanks!
Tbh I've always wanted to do long distance touring, putting on the miles, so a big comfy adventure bike was the way to go.

Its not superduke fast, but its not slow either, never felt wanting for power riding around

How does it compare to the 1290 Super Adventure?

I'll know more as I ride it, but so far its got the DCT(which is really good anywhere near traffic and stop lights), paint scheme is prettier, and sound is better I would say.

The 1290 engine is obviously faster, but in the real world with cars, trees, traffic, cops and speed limits...Im not really concerned about insane horsepower, the honda's got more than enough for me

I think your KTM also has radar? and 19" wheels

Where as im rocking 21" now, with what I would wager are 80/20 tires(road biased)

It is new, the adventure sports touring model

I havent put a lot of miles on it yet so this is fairly preliminary, I went with the DCT, based on the reviews saying its flawless, and in my real world experience, this is def true, its impossible to fool tbh.

I was a bit worried as its a large heavy bike with no clutch and I have a tight garage to maneuver around, but no issues, the DCT is foolproof, the fueling is scary good, really dialed in.

As for the colors I wanted something more aesthetically pleasing after the last orange bike

I honestly like the DCT over an old school shifter now. Its so easy to handle on the road at all speeds and scenarios that I can see it being a phenomenal commuter as well.

It seems there are 3 ways to shift, you leave it in automatic(drive) and it short shifts for you, you can put it in sport mode and it seems to hold the gears a bit longer, or you can go into full manual mode and shift like a regular manual bike but with little paddles.

You can also at any point temporarily override the automatic if you want to

The biggest surprises so far?
1. The sound. Its amazing. theres no slip-on or exhaust on it, but it sounds really good stock(way better than the duke ever did).
2. The ease-ability of it. Its so easy to use, very well balanced at low speeds, the DCT makes it really easy to ride, I dont have to put it in nuetral at red lights, it never stalls, I dont even have to put my feet down at stop signs.

The switchgear quality is MILES ahead of the ktm. (No more sloppy indicator button.)
Every button or switch is very tactile and positive.
Also happy to have an old school key again.

Because its a flagship ADV bike, the number of modes, buttons, electronic options and adjustability is mind boggling.
It will likely take me 2 weeks of riding/reading the manual to understand everything.

There were some other bikes I was also looking at but the deciding factor was the suspension, by all accounts its ridiculously good, with infinite adjustability.

You can try it out if you ever drop by one of the meets.

I think for distance stuff, the DCT will be really nice. You can always click the gears if you want more control.

Almost every review I've read/watched has either complained or commented on the sheer volume of buttons. The funny thing is I remember the previous gen Civic got hammered for not having enough buttons. I think it's one of those bike tester problems that matters when you're only jumping on the bike for a day or two, but actual owners will have no issue once they've figured it out. Between the suspension and other settings, it's arguably the most technologically advanced bike out there. Plus it has Android Auto / Car Play, though I seem to recall someone saying it was a bit awkward to actually plug in cleanly.

I'll be curious if you can get the insane tank range that I've read is doable, too..

Looks like everyone is trading in the supernakeds for adv bikes now ;)

You know I've been looking, but weirdly commuting on the Burgman has made me fall in love with the Tuono all over again. Getting back on after the lazy performance of the scooter is like strapping myself to a rocketship. Went for a rip the other day, and realized just how much I'm short shifting on the road. Letting it sing past 8-9000 rpm sounds incredible. I'm not ready for the ADV retirement home just yet... (though it's probably a matter of time)

I believe it, gas bar didnt move after all the riding I did. on the KTM i'd surely be looking for a gas station (just ask @Katatonic )

For sure, its confusing at first, but eventually it becomes second nature.

This is why I went with the adventure sports...current GS owners telling me its better than the beemer.

I think I prefer the DCT in urban environments, makes riding so easy. out on the open road, you dont mind shifting every now and then, or when you
get on the twisty roads, but the "set it and forget it" nature of the DCT really shines in tighter urban environments where you're constantly using the clutch or sitting at stop lights or navigating tight traffic.

It beats conventional shifting and the modern quickshifters in urban environments imo

I look forward to trying out the android auto/car play, I think this is why they have 2 speedometers on the bike.

Im still surprised by how good the africa twin sounds...the KTM sounded very much like an angry tractor. the AF in manual mode sounds AMA-ZING.

At low revs it pops and bangs, and anytime you carry the gears a bit, it has this musical growl thats almost italian/ducati-esque.

Between the feel, sound and torque of the bike, who says honda cant do character?

I thought long and hard about giving up the SDR, on a perfectly smooth and twisty road it was ridiculous fun, but how many of those
do we have around here? Between this and the long distance comfort, it was a inevitable.

You need to update your signature to account for the new horse.

Traded in the SDR and picked up this bad boy today, will write a review soon

Very nice choice and hope you continue to enjoy that one for long time. Now you can actually ride far away enough to some places with better backgrounds for your pictures.

Had to pay homage at the coffee shop in typical ADV fashion. (Starbucks wouldnt let me in without a BMW badge)

Find a Starbucks with a gravel driveway, they don't see many GS bikes.
