Border Crossing

passport in the jacket front pocket
earplugs out
handover the passport and take helmet off
yes sir/mam
have you answers prepared re: where, how long, where you're staying
a few bucks in USD for the tolls that quite often follow the border crossing

I'd like to be able to use nexus, but... I often cross the border with firearms and well, nexus doesn't allow for it.
That said... out of dozens of crossings with firearms I've been sent to secondary like three times... I'm like WTF, why not just lemme nexus bro?

Something else to consider. If you choose not to take all of the required documents with you, and they deny you entry, you will be flagged. If asked at future crossings if you have ever been denied entry, you will answer yes (they will know by scanning your passport but will ask anyway). That may or may not send you to secondary. It will regardless start a very long conversation with them. If there are “skeletons in your closet”, do some research to see if past indiscretions may be an issue.

Lots of good advice here mentioned already. Respect the process, people and the fact that you are crossing an international border into a country which has been attacked domestically.

I get it and always thank them on the way through.

All this sounds like way to much trouble for me. I'll just stay in Canada, thanks. :)

direction of travel and destinations are limited
after doing the east coast a few times
then the top of Superior a few times
there ain't much else to see via 2 wheels

oooooooo so wrong

You can get to anywhere from here.

The back woods of Ioco is nice.

North eastern states make for a nice ride. Even the interstate is pretty and scenic but, if you venture off the interstate onto secondary roads, they are nice and generally entertaining. Finger lakes and beyond are just a few hours from The GTA.

I just renewed mine online for another 5 years. Quick and easy.

Just realized mine expires soon. How long did it take for the renewal to get approved, did you have to go for another interview?

Already did the online renewal earlier today.

I've crossed back and forth between the US and Canada at several different locations and have never removed my helmet. However, I wear a modular helmet, lift the chin guard and remove my glasses, so that might be the difference.
Pull up to the window, stop the engine, present passport, answer their questions and your on your way in a minute or so.

I renewed mine 6 months ago, it took 5 weeks to be approved (again) and I did not have to come in for an interview. I understand the call for interview is completely random. It took about 8 weeks in total to have the new card in hand. for anybody with a nexus, check your expiration date and DO NOT miss the renewal date if you want another one. If it expires you start ALL over.

I wish. I've only crossed by car, but about half the time they pull me in for extra questioning. Then a couple of guys search my car while I'm inside answering their questions. Once they even brought a dog to sniff around my car.

But I wonder if they're easier on motorcyclists because there's less space to hide illegal stuff on a bike.

West coast? How about Tuktoyaktuk?

West Coast is great
Tuk? not my cup of tea

the several provinces of flat nothingness between those places
and I include the western half of Ontario on that list
that's the issue and what makes me quite often border cross south
for some interesting, unexplored territory

those flat area are best viewed from 35,000 ft

You get pulled in for secondary inspection half the time?? Something is definitely wrong here. You either have a prior issue on file that flags you or you fit a high risk (in their learned opinion) profile.

I should say that in many years of crossing the US border the only people I've seen being questioned at length or having to open there trunk etc... are black or people of colour. Not a valid sample I know, but just my experience.

Yep, happens to me sometimes, even if the wife is with me, gotta go sit in a room for an hour while they search the car.

No priors or anything, and have never been turned away either, must have a dangerous looking face :ROFLMAO:

It's not that bad really... you can ride pretty fast so it doesnt last that long.

SW Ontario for sure but #17 is a twisty, up and down fun fest through northern Ontario.

'Ridden to BC the past two summers and will do it again next year... 'Love it.

If you say you are going to a concert, you obviously have drugs and require a search. That is my experience. I no longer use that destination. I am now going on a vacation to a hotel.
