Bold, iPhone, or Android (HTC / Samsung)?

Keep waiting for the next new thing, and you'll never buy anything

Or buy a iphone 4S today with its rinkydnk screen and be stuck with it for 3 years contract, and regret not waiting for the bigger screened and likely better featured iphone 5 coming "tomorrow."

The secret to a simple life?

But as I think you pointed out, the last spike in iPad sales was largely due to people holding off for the Next Big Thing based on the sales slump that preceeded the spike.

IMO now is a good time to wait, with BB10 and iP5 coming.

Wouldn't hurt to wait for WWDC (mid june) to see if they announce the new iPhone there.

If they don't, it'll probably be in the fall.

if form factor size is the issue, stick with the iphone. it will do everything you need it to, and with a very simple to use interface. my wife loves it.

if you don't mind a larger screen, go with the sammy s2x (lte). . .i have it and it exceeds all of my expectations. it is phenomenal.

What are your thoughts of the battery life and did you look at the Galaxy Nexus (yes, I know it's even bigger than the s II)?

DON'T get an iphone I hate my phone its useless the battery sucks and its slow as hell I would say go with Android given RIMs current financial issues.

EDIT: Specifically my phone gets super hot super fast, drops calls randomly, Also when it does get hot it crashes and you cant make calls. Some phones also have difficulty connecting to it. My GF uses a pseudo smartphone and it randomly cuts out. Not sure if this is an issue with her phone or mine though.

the battery life on my phone has always lasted at least the work day (8+ hours)

nexus had not yet hit the street when i got my phone, so no, did not look at it.

I was on the berry boat (pearl, and the curve) and i hopped off the sinking ship onto an Android.

Waited for the Galaxy Nexus for so many months (was with telus)

Never couldve been happier. If you're confident enough to follow videos/instructions to unlock/root it and then install a custom rom/kernel (might sound like chinese right now to you but read about it)..you will have some of the best phones available on the market.
I have good 12-14 hour days on a single charge with about 2-3 hours of on screen time. It does what i want it to do, and more, when i want it to do, with almost no lag!
IMO the Galaxy S2 LTE has great chances to surpass the stock Galaxy Nexus once it gets the OS update to 4.0 (Ice cream sandwich) but thats if youre keeping the phone bone stock!

Otherwise if youre not a big guy on the tweaking and customizing of your software and what not, get an iPhone.

EDIT) Oh and size-wise, i find that Galaxy S2 LTE feels bigger in hand than the G-Nexus, i think its made slimmer

But is it being released as a phone or a tablet??? These things are getting huge!

It's a phone. Agreed they are getting big, I think the S2 is as big as I would want comfortably in a phone. The S3 shouldn't be much bigger, if at all. A friend of mine has the Note, which is a beautiful device - if you like holding a paperback novel up to your ear to make a call.

sounds like an issue with your phone, i'd complain to your phone company/apple

What she said!

And apple is usually pretty good with after sales service... i hate them, but i gotta give em that!

I used to have a windows phone, which I liked, I now have a Nokia N8 using Symbian Anna which is good, and I have a Nexus S using Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which I love and is the best OS I have used. Rumour has it, Google is coming out with their own phone in the fall, and it will have the new OS android 5 Jelly Bean. I have used an iPhone, girlfriend has one, no to fond of it.Especially the control apple has over it.

I'm amazed how little support Blackberry is getting in this thread, guess it's a reflection of the larger mentality about Blackberry these days. Amazing how things change in a short period of time

BB10 is coming out in the fall, and will not be compatible with any of the current phones, might want to keep that in mind. As a whole, Blackberry's future is not looking very bright at the present time. BB's situation means you'll probably see heavy discounts on phones in the very near future if you're inclined to go in that direction.

Android phones are nice, and I have no real issue with them. My main pet peeve is the slow update process, ICS is only on 5% of Android products, which is absolutely insane to me. IOS5 is somewhere above 80% for comparison, and they were released at a similar time. Issue is that you have to wait until your manufacturer and then your carrier "modifies/screws up" the latest Android release and then decides to release it to you, if they ever get around to doing it. Something like the Galaxy Note still does not have an official ICS release. Of course there are hacked roms if you want to get into that. But the majority of non tech savvy and even tech savvy users don't want to bother with the headache.

iPhone's are ubiquitous and many people dislike them because of that, who doesn't like rooting for the underdog after all. At the end of the day, I love the product and it works beautifully for what I need. Even when playing on it all day, I don't remember the last time I had to plug it in before the end of the day. There are expandable battery cases and the like if you need it. Further, Apple's warranty service is the best I've received of any company, of any product, anywhere. Years ago, my Fido iPhone 3G stopped working in Miami, I'm pretty sure due to a crappy car charger. I was able to get a replacement AT&T iPhone at 11pm on a Saturday night at the Apple store on Lincoln Rd. Used that while I was in the states, exchanged it for a Fido iPhone once I got back home. Apple even offered to ship me a Fido iPhone to Miami, but it would take a few days that I didn't have. Service like that is one of the main reasons why I became a serious Apple fan.

Speaking of underdogs, maybe look into Nokia's Windows phones. I have yet to play around with them, but the majority of the reviews I've read are absolutely glowing about them

I'm an app developer, and an avid BlackBerry user. I love my Bold 9900, and will be getting a BB10 phone.

Don't buy one, unless you absolutely need a keyboard.

If you can wait, wait for BB10. If not, get an iPhone or Galaxy Nexus. Both parents have an iPhone 4, and I picked up a Galaxy Nexus recently for dev work.

The Nexus is awesome. Vibrant screen, fast, lots of apps... but it gets super warm, very quickly. It's kind of unnerving. Do not bother with any other Android phones. If it's not Nexus, they suck. Crap build quality, crap base OS/software, and very little support for updates.

iPhone is awesome too. The latest iOS 5 works on phones that are more than 3 years old. That's fantastic support. Fact is, iPhones are successful for a reason. Great hardware, great app selection, great software, and tons of support for updates. You can't go wrong with them. They are getting a bit dated though.

At the end of it though, it's about personal preference. As much as I tout iPhone and Android, I can't use them. They are not intuitive to me, they do not fit my workflow and style. BlackBerry does. I rarely use apps, I'm mostly e-mailing, BBMing, texting, or using twitter. BlackBerry lets me use those quickly and intuitively. The Galaxy works pretty well in this regard, but not as well as my BlackBerry. I could just be old and stubborn though.

If you are not old and stubborn like me, and cannot wait until October, go with the Galaxy Nexus or iPhone 4S. Or else wait for BlackBerry 10. Or if you need a keyboard, go with a Bold 9900.

(Note I didn't talk about Windows phones. Those are fantastic devices too, even Steve Wozniak likes them. Issue there is app selection, but they're working on that. Another great option, but I don't have much experience with them.)

Two last things; battery is ALWAYS an issue with me, as is small form factor.

Sooooo, did you purchase anything yet??

Finally got around to checking the reviews on the new Samsung Galaxy 3. It boasts excellent battery life. Its quite thin and feature packed. And, surprisingly, the back cover can be removed and the battery can be easily removed and exchanged, something former BB owners will appreciate.

Very impressive review.

Not yet. After a security wipe and re-install, my Torch seems to be better (what I thought was a hardware issue may actually be a software issue). I continue to research but now it seems I have a bit more time. Neither of the 3 platforms is perfect for what I want;
- BB has a questionable future, is too far behind, and other than the Torch, the screens are too small (BB10?)
- iPhone is too regimented in how it operates and too tied to iTunes, but it works VERY well (iPhone 5?)
- Android phones available on Rogers are all BIG and thin which is great but whatever I choose has to be tough. I'm too concerned that I'd end up snapping an Android phone. I also don't like everyone having a piece of the OS and as such, if I did go that route it would be a Nexus phone

buy a good case like a ballistic or otterbox and you'd have to try really hard to snap the phone.
