BMW owners movement!

Hello BMW owners movement - just putting this out there , just in case you were not aware of it. I have quite a ride coming up and am looking to spread the word. I did speak to BMW Endras who said they would put up posters but have not been back to check. It is FREE and a Good solid day of riding awaits you.

Check it out www.Cannonball500.ca - June 21st, 2015 - Ontario and Alberta kicking off the same day.
Thank you - Cheers

Trying to figure out what to do for my 1000km maintenance. Thinking about buying the supplies from my dealer and doing it myself, just want to make sure I don't void the warranty in the meantime.

Any of you do the maintenance yourself, even during the warranty period?

I just got off the phone with John at Budd's and was very surprised to hear him say he services the bikes without BMW's recommended oil (synthetic 5w-40). Instead he uses Motul semi-syntheic 10w40 as he says the fully synthetic is not good for boxer engines.

So confused!

I guess not TOO surprising. KTM tells you not to use Synthetic on the KTM 690 Enduro R for the first 7,000KM or so.

Changing your own oil should not void the warranty at all. Just make sure you keep your receipts for the filter and oil. Use approved oil from the owners manual (this can save a lot of headaches down the road if any problems should arise)

Wolf BMW recommended Lucas Oil for me on my old '06 1200GS and for my '10 GSA. I have always done my own oil changes even when in warranty without any issues. I have been using synthetic oil in my GSA, maybe there is something different about the LC GS's that a full synthetic is not good for?

Good to know thanks. I'll call Wolf's tomorrow to get their take. I think the recommendation for non synthetic was for new engine break-in... but I'm not 100% sure. If I'm not getting it serviced by BMW though, I figure I better stick with the manual... and there is no 5w-40 that isn't synthetic that meets the requirements in the manual.

I think main difference between synt and semy etc is a service interval. You can use even mineral oil matched viscosity but change it every 5000k. Only requirement for wet clutch - JASO M2 spec for oil.

What oil do you choose for final drive for your 600 miles service?

Not sure about the GS but the super sports come with rev limiter enabled and you need the GS-911 tool to remove the limiter. There is nothing in the warranty that says that you have to take it to BMW but you should keep track of all your receipts and some kind of record to show in case there are disputes. Talk to the dealer where you bought or will service and go from there.

If there is one service I would want done by the dealership, would be the first. You just spent 25+k on on the purchase get them to cover it for you.

here is the point. You spent a lot of money and why you rely on people who dont really care and just make money on your problem?

The user manual for my G650GS says synthetic only after 10000km.

That's interesting. No mention in my manual, and the US manual apparently recommends the fully synthetic Castrol 5w40.

What year is your 650GS?

There's no rev limiter, however if you have the riding modes pro feature on the bike (which I do), they plug it in to activate it during your first service.

Just got my response back from BMW Canada. Very weird that they wouldn't talk about oil at all:

"Doing your own maintenance work will not void the warranty. However, if any work not done by a BMW retailer causes a part to fail, this would not be covered by warranty. For your other two inquiries, we are regretfully not permitted or able to give oil recommendations or information. We must refer you to your retailer for these answers. Should you need it, you will find a complete listing of authorized retailers on our website at www.bmw-motorrad.ca. We hope you find this helpful."

Interesting as well... The new engines must be a different story, as the manual does not mention anything about synthetic after the first X amount of kms. I spoke to a couple other BMW dealers and they mentioned they use synthetic all the way through from the very beginning. I'll go that route.

Had my 1K service done by Adrian @ Ace Moto Tech. I'm in Ancaster and he's in Milton so it was a heck of a lot closer than taking it to Downtown BMW.

There are plenty of reviews about Ace Moto Tech in the "Reviews" sub-forum and as others have stated, he did an excellent job on my bike. Given the amount of money I paid to buy my bike, I wanted to get the work done by someone who knows what they are doing and felt that having Adrian do the 1K service was well worth it for my own peace of mind.

Adrian was very thorough and even sent me pictures of the progress of his work on my bike. Here is a sampling:

It's completely up to you but you might also consider using someone like Adrian to do this..

Cheers!

Crackberry,

did you change oil in final drive? If yes - which oil you use?

The work was done by Adrian @ Ace Moto tech, I left my bike at his place and picked it up when he was done. I know he changed it but I didn't get into the specifics of type of oils being used unfortunately. :dontknow:

That's impressive stuff... he seems like a great shop to take the bike too. Taking photos to document the steps shows he clearly cares about the bike and customer satisfaction.

I've done enough research now and am clear what I need to do - my own service with 5w40 synthetic, and then I'll take it into the dealership afterwards so they can plug it into the computer for diagnoses and update the software. I don't know enough mechanics in the general area that I feel confident enough doing it right, especially when you factor in the heavy cost involved - I'm getting quoted from $300-$350+ tax which is just way too high. Wolfs out in London only charges $200 which is very fair, but it's going to be too much of a hassle to get it there.

I'm looking forward to doing it myself. Will likely buy all the OEM parts from my dealership before hand.
