Bikes with character...

I don't know about character but I think these things are neat:

-Some respect for the clear language of "no test rides"
-163hp. Really? I am surprised to even learn that the ZZR1200 did in fact make more power than the ZX11D
-I think the ZZR1200 famously had less character than the ZX11D, which made it less popular

The 701 is extremely reliable. Maybe even bulletproof.

"Extremely reliable" cannot be used in a sentence to describe anything Ducati makes or has ever made. Granted, they are getting better.

The guy formerly known as Mladin.

"Extremely reliable" is something I'd associate with Honda (motorcycles), definitely not KTM. I was considering a 690 SMCR or 701 SM to replace my SXV, but when I see some of the recurring horror stories on the 701 and 690 owners groups on FB, it makes me wonder (cams and rockers getting chewed up, cases disintegrating, oil leaks. fuel pump failure, stalling, electronics not working properly). And these are on the current generation of engines. Even MCN says as recently as last year "However, KTM aren't well known for building reliable bikes, and some have electrical gremlins a dealer will need to fix. If you're buying used, make sure you check everything": KTM 690 ENDURO R (2019 - on) Review | MCN

Have you ever owned a Ducati? My 21-year-old 998 with probably 80,000 kms now has been reliable. Then again, so have my SXV's.

Thoughts on the Vulcan S? Ninja 650 motor but in a cruiser body.

BMW ride event June 23 in Barrie. I'm testing out a R9T. Looks interesting. I'd love a smaller bike to compliment the K1600. Anyone here own or have owned a R9T?
I had an R9T….beautiful bike. The suspension didn’t agree with my weight. I also hated the fact that the tank needs to be removed to replace the battery.

See I don’t know these things in the details…
as a rule jap bikes will be boring
There are exceptions, with crossplane cranks and odd firing orders etc.

To oversimplify:

If you like looks, sound and character go italy.
If you like wheelies, backing it in and character go austria.
If you like honda but dont like japan, go germany.

Hmm. Generally speaking?

Japan for dependability and variety, not gee wizzery.

Euro for style and gee wizzery, but not dependability.

You want boring? Sitting in your garage with your bike for a couple of weeks waiting for an Austrian part to arrive.

Instead of the Vulcan S, this Guzzi is pretty sweet:
