Why can't you guys set up a sting at a condo or similar location where bikes get stolen all the time?

The amounts of thefts that are reported on this site alone are mind blowing, i don't even want to imagine the numbers for all of gta.

Because he's too busy watching all the bad drivers on Youtube...

Because, bikes will get stolen, when they do a coffee run...

That thread he put up quickly turned sour. Why are so many people hating on him trying to go that extra mile to help.

Not to say you can't have an opposing view, but at least contribute in a meaningful manner.

Nobody is hating on him, just doesn't look legit ;)

This is a legitimate question and I wish I had an answer. We're talking about a real process to catch real bad guys.

1. build a dummy bike
2. fill it to the tits with sensors and gps so you know when it moves.
3. catch whoever stole it
4. Rinse/Repeat

and not even police, why doesn't an insurance company do this? This is hundreds of thousands of dollars in claims that could potentially be prevented.

why don't I do this?

Perhaps because the insurance company's job is insurance, not crime prevention and apprehending criminals. That would be the job of the police..

This is an excellent question; I for one, am eager to see Bike Cop's response.

If not a direct response, how about some advice on things we can do to make the investigation easier... Parking in a condo garage downtown means you are almost guaranteed to have it stolen.

I know it's not their job but I'm wondering if it wouldn't be cost-effective to hire a private investigator (or 3, or 5) outfit some bikes with trackers and catch motorcycle thieves. If this project costs $15,000 and busts a ring responsible for dozens of thefts, is it not a sound business decision?

It sounds like the most fun ever also.

Can i ask how is he supposed to look legit. He hasn't said this is an official police project just something he is doing

Can a traffic cop just branch out like Dirty Harry? Billable hours? OT? Doesn't a legit patrol officer have name + badge in full view on the job. Seriously, I'd like to know.

perhaps it isn't the job of the police to prevent crime... Lock it or loose it ! ... if *you* don't lock it up secure enough.. it isn't their job ... but I guess they still have to do the paper work..

At least in BC they have bait cars. In Ontario the system doesn't care. Speeding tickets and parking tickets are.priorities here

It's so simple. Ever notice how people drive on their best behaviour when there's a cop car around? Hire* more traffic cops. Let them drive around in marked and unmarked cars. They could use some type of radio to communicate with each other. When a cop sees somebody driving like the proverbial Fstick they could pull him over for a chat and warning. Enter offenders name in a data base (need computer), next infraction is going to hurt the wallet. Word will reach the populace.

In my world these new hires would be a special breed, sunshine lister wannabes need not apply. They're only driving around telling people to pull up their socks and pass along tickets on an as needed basis A grade 12er could do it. What's base pay for Canadian Military? That would do. Police union would kick up a fuss tho.

+1

it's not about what makes sense or what law states. it's about REVENUE. Enforce what generates revenue, be selective with the law. Speeding and Parking.
hide at the bottom of a hill and hand out speeding tickets. yet countless drivers who just can't drive, they don't speed, but can't drive are left alone…

doing "work" like creating a unit, bait bike and investigating to catch bike thieves, doesn't generate revenue. so why bother?

The only thing I know about bait cars is what I've seen on tv, probably the same stuff you folks have seen. I would hazard a guess to say there isn't an appetite for bait bikes due to the perception by police brass that it would cause a pursuit with said motorcycle, and that doesn't look good and/or is too risky for the rider.

If you're after thefts from condos, you have to go where the condos are... Which is outside the catchment area for the OPP. This is a project for TPS. I can try to find some info on how to deter thieves, but I have a feeling it won't be anything that we don't already know - lock steering, disc locks, GPS tracking, chain it to the floor, etc. the fact is that if someone really wants the bike, they will find a way to get it. Locks just keep honest people honest.
