Bike won't start after winter storage (even with new battery)

so i hope not to make this long but i will explain ever detail so you get a better understanding of what could be wrong.

I stored my bike over the winter (October) like usual except this time i put fuel stabilizer in it.

i tried to start it in March like usual the battery is dead as i didn't put it on a tender.
I tried to jump start my bike with a running car. It worked. i rode it for 5min then I left it to idle after 5 min the idle was jumping up and down and it died.
I tried to jump it again the next day with a running car it didn't work. ( i know you shouldn't have the car running but i learned this after)
I bought a new battery and tried to start the bike. The fuel pump turns on, lights everything, bike cranks but won't turn over.
All fuses are not blown i checked all of them.

took it to a mechanic that said ECU was fried. Would cost me 1200$ to fix. Found ECU for $300 online.

is the ECU fried? or could be something else?

Also my rear wheel locked up and wouldn't move back or forth even in neutral. The tow truck driver pushed it with some force, we heard a snap and it moved freely for a bit then locked up again when it got to the shop.

any advice would help. THANKS.

Jump starting a bike off a running car can do all sorts of damage to your electrical system.

that's quite a pickle
what's the bike worth...$2,500 ??

it could be any number of things
how committed are you to riding motorcycles?

bike cranks but won't turn over.

FYI "Crank" and "Turn over" are one in the same. I'm assuming you mean "fire", as in, start.

Start by checking the 3 basics - fuel, air, ignition. Without all 3 an engine won't run.

Fuel....petcock turned on? IS there actually fuel? Clogged filter? Is the fuel pump actually pumping? Just because it makes noise doesn't mean its doing anything. Are the plugs wet?

Air... mouse nest clogging air filter/intake box? Throttle moving freely and properly?

Ignition....is there spark? Are the plugs wet? Will it start on propane or ether? The latter helps diagnose #1 as well if it's a fuel starvation issue.

What diagnostics has the "shop" done to verify that it's the ECM? "Throwing parts at it" is a very expensive method of fixing any motorized vehicle.

Sounds to me like you have more than one problem...

I have a buddy with a track sv, and one he was planning on selling for parts. They are both 2nd gen sv650. '04 and '05 I think.

Worse comes to worse, pm me and I can send you his info.

How did he know the ECU was fried? or is it covered in the service manual?
Best way I have ever found to trouble shoot a bike is to have 2 of them, put your part in the other bike and see if the problem moves.
You need a buddy with a SV650S (y)

yes very committed thats why im trying to trouble shoot the issue and not spend $2500 to fix something that might not be that big of an issue.

yes i mean fire up sorry.
Also theres no petcock as its a fuel injected bike.

Im not sure what diagnostics the shop has done to verify its the ECM. If it is the ECM could i just plug and play a new ECM as i found some online for $300?

thanks, im still not sure what parts i need. When i figure that out ill let you know.

how should i go ahead and trouble shoot the issues to figure out what the problem is?

Try and find a free copy of the service manual first.
... found it, carl salter dot com (y)

at this point your other problem could be worse
what do you mean the tow truck guy pushed it?
like with his hands on the handlebars?
or with something powered?
chain/sprockets all look normal?

My point was similar to what Trials said.

Buy a parts bike that was a runner (for the cost of what a new ecu was quoted)

Swap the parts you were told are cooked (ecu, clutch locked up, transmission won't shift)

Sell the remainder on kijiji to someone else with sv650 issues for near the price you bought it for.

I did the same with a honda vtr1000f.

-Parts bike was a grand.
-used the shock, bodywork, tank, exhaust, windshield. Tires were new.
-sold engine for $800
-sold rearsets for $50
-calipers for $70
Spare bodywork, rads, stock exhaust $300

Bike was now free.

Had bins of common parts incase I crashed it.

Sold spares with my street vtr1000 when I moved on to another bike.

You get the idea.

? He is a transport truck refridgeration expert as far as I remember.

Shadetree mechanic maybe? Been a while since I spoke to him, or attended one of his nutty rides.

The shop could not test the ECM according to this, unless they have a special tester gizmo and I doubt it.
"
  • - Never connect any tester (voltmeter, ohmmeter, or whatever) to the ECM when its coupler is disconnected .
Otherwise, damage to ECM may result.
  • - Never connect an ohmmeter to the ECM with its coupler con- nected. If attempted, damage to ECM or sensors may result .
"
I think you have to test it by fact of other things working ok.
... holy look at all the codes

thanks, great idea, i was just trying to get it fixed to sell to get a dirt bike, as im getting into biking off road. So im not sure what to do now if its worth even getting it fixed if i can't do it my self.

No. You must be thinking of someone else

no with his hands on the handlebars with a little bit of force

well that's good, pretty hard to break anything like that

tell the shop to get the ECM, if that fixes it, great
if not, you're not stuck with it

biggest concern with boosting from a running car
is the heat sync on the reg/rec will burn up
too much current through the toaster

would say it's not typical to damage an ECM like that
but it is possible

No, its him I'm thinking of.

Yeah. It is diesel truck generators he is into now.
Didn't realize he got back into working on bikes.

Go straight to the dirt bike they are easier to fix ;) sell the SV for parts.
