Best bike to enter cruiser scene?

I have a Shadow Phantom, used you should be able to pick up a good one between 5-8. Personally I do like the bike, but if I had it to do again, I might have gone the Harley route. I wasn't really bike shopping when I went into the Honda dealer and bought this. Had I been shopping I would have done the research and found out that the HD 750 was cheaper and if I recall outperforms slightly. Vulcan 900 might have also been a consideration.

I will say that you will typically want more motor on the cruisers though, it only took me one or two seasons before I was wishing I bought more bike.

Edit: If you will be doing long rides of an hour or more, avoid entry level cruisers and get a mid range bike. Otherwise check beforehand if an aftermarket seat is available, expect to spend 700-1000 for a good seat that won't hurt your ass after an hour.

I'm liking the Indian Scout Bobber these days, but it's definitely not a "tall rider" motorcycle.

If I wasn’t already swapping I’d buy one as an urban cruiser.

I'll fourth a VTX. 1300 is a good compromise on insurability versus the 1800 which some insurers will give the fuzzy eyeball to and a new rider will probably find unweildy as the VTX is a bit of a top heavy bike to begin with, much less the 1800 version with the bigger tank.

I regret selling mine a little more every day. OP, I put almost 100,000km on mine inside just under 5 years of ownership and the thing was a Timex. As as a not svelte 6' tall rider the thing fit me like a glove. With a set of highway pegs I found it more comfortable than my Vulcan Voyager I replaced it with. I just needed more storage than the VTX had to offer as I'm a long distance/endurance enthusiast. At least I was before Covid. :/

Best part of a VTX is you can find the 1300's all day long for $3500-$5K. It's a whole lot of bike for the money.

No, the CTX is a 4 banger. The VTX is a V-Twin.

Rebel 1100 out of the question as the seating position is same as the 500 you tried out.

HD 883 may be too tight as well.

Used:
Yamaha Bolt?
Indian Scout?
HD 48?
Vulcan 900?
Victory Highball?

I was looking at vulcan or thunderbird storm when I made the switch to cruisers. As I sat on a vulcan at Ben's Motorcycles in Lakefield I looked down at it and realized that I should just buy the real thing instead of a copycat. If I were to buy an adventure bike I would buy that BMW that every bike wants to be. Get a real Harley.

Get a used 1200 sportster. buy cheap parts from amazon to make it fit you right. If you're tall you can buy forward controls, further-forward controls, short forward controls. Every handlebar, riser, seat combo you could ever dream of to make it fit. just stay away from the dealerships.

89-03=rigid mount motor, carb
04-06=rubber mount motor, carb
07-21=rubber mount motor, efi
22+ = new bike that is now trying to copy the scout

The honda vtx was a great bike. I had a 1300 and never had an issue with it in different riding scenario
VTX is on my radar for next bike, probably the 1800 though, would be looking for the full fairing touring model. Where the used prices are hovering, it's like getting a street glide for sportster money.
