And other countries like Australia don't have liability insurance requirements for their taxi operators?

I was surprised how cheap taxis were in Singapore last time I was there, especially considering the insane fees they have to own a vehicle. See this page:

To own a taxi in Singapore it is $140 for the registration fee, then $107000 (if the car is valued around $75000) for an ARF (Additional Registration Fee) plus Excise duty (20% of OMV) -- and all that is just for licensing, no maintenance, fuel, wages or anything else considered.

I used to take taxis everywhere in Jakarta -- and it was dirt cheap there because wages are cheap, fuel was cheap, and I doubt they need any insurance to run there. A 30km trip across Jakarta was $3 or $4 depending on traffic.

Anyway, back to this country. For me, taxis are not even a consideration. If I am going to be drinking somewhere, either one person in the group stays sober to drive or I am on the bus. If I need a ride to the airport I would sooner pay someone off of kijiji than give a dime to the POS taxi industry we have here.

The problem is that you can't get HIS number if he doesn't let you in the car.

Really? some of you guys are comparing some of the highest outright purchase car costs, inspections, liability and permitting costs, fuel and taxes in the known world and your comparison is an Asian death cab?

Cleaning 22yr old chick puke off the floor of the backseat at 3am and -12? I'd be looking at a premium pricing program to be in effect.

My friends that own a limo service wont do prom, bachelorette parties or New years for clients under 30. Getting the stink out of a 125k car just isnt worth it.
 
Chicago cabs are allowed to charge extra ($125 IIRC) if you soil their cab. I think it's a great idea. The cabbies say that even for that price they are losing as a) finding someone to clean up puke and get the smell out isn't cheap and b) they are out of commission for hours while they get the car cleaned.

Price gouging everyone for the chance you may puke is not cool, but after you puke, you should pay through the nose to teach you a lesson.

I don't agree with a lot of the cab bs (mostly that the investors holding the licences get rich while the drivers make very little), but the drivers definitely don't get paid enough to deal with puke (or other bodily fluids) in their car.

But how far do you get in 15 minutes in Barrie? I live within only a few KM (maybe 6 depending on how far you're going) of downtown, it takes maybe 15-20 minutes and it costs me around $20-25. Also, where do you find a tow for $40? Last time my car broke down on the 401 about a km from the Dixie exit I was charged $200 to tow it to Pearson, less than 8 km away.

5.3km, it only took 15 mins because theres so many lights in this town. It would have been a $80 round trip and you could have it towed for ~$100 from private property if your not in a hurry unlike the side of the road when your stuck and they know it. It's obviously not cheaper to get a tow but the spread between cab and tow is alarmingly narrow.

They were giving you the brush off.
5 guys aren't driving the cab at the same time.
Now you can get the taxi company into trouble, if they don't know who was driving at a particular time.

Why would the city brush me off? Guess the guy was feeling lazy? He called me back after I emailed to ask me the cabbie's number. He could've just ignored the email.
 
Coworker just told me about the Beck Taxi app for smartphones.
Request a cab, wait until it's outside, finito.
