Not a lot of money considering the cost of the vehicle and fuel plus wages for an hour. I wouldn't drive from miss to downtown for 80.

The only people making money are the owners of the cab plates, and the car owners. The drivers rent both and then try to squeak out a living
OP should have just ponied up given that it's new years + g/f combo.
But I do sympathize with OP regarding taxi fares. It's beyond ridiculous... Paid $80 to get from Mississauga to downtown Toronto the other night. Ludicrous.
That is true but it's not the clients' fault that the system is bad. If they try to gouge the client, there is a problem that should be reported.
Should have ordered a pizza delivered to your place then got a ride home with the delivery guy.
HollywoodGood trick. Anyone tried this?
Wow, that's cheap. You should see what cabs in Barrie cost. $40 bucks for a trip less than 15mins. It's pretty much the same price to drive to the bar downtown and then have your car towed home.

Didn't think I would be alone on this thought, but $80 for a cab ride downtown is NOT cheap.
I don't believe the $$ is going directly into the taxi drivers pockets; I'm sure the number plate and agency fees add up for them. However, it still doesn't detract from the fact that $80 for a 25 km ride is too much!!

It's way cheaper than $40 for 5.3kms.
Really? I go out for New Years most years and have never seen this. Maybe things might be a touch more expensive but never even anywhere near double.Just as bad as restaurants/bars charging 3-5x as much on NY. Everyone does it and everyone will continue to do it. No biggie.
You need the cabbie's number, not the cab number. Found this out trying to complain about a cab's driving once. They told me a single cab can have over 5 different drivers and there's no way to know who was driving it.+1 That will cost the cabdriver his licence. Also complain to Beck who will fire the driver.
That's why they put those big honking numbers all over the car.
But how far do you get in 15 minutes in Barrie? I live within only a few KM (maybe 6 depending on how far you're going) of downtown, it takes maybe 15-20 minutes and it costs me around $20-25. Also, where do you find a tow for $40? Last time my car broke down on the 401 about a km from the Dixie exit I was charged $200 to tow it to Pearson, less than 8 km away.Wow, that's cheap. Fully agree...cabbies who gouge should be reporter because its not fair to the client. I think the pricing here is ridiculous. Ive had the pleasure of taking cabs in a few countries and this is by far one of the most expensive...in Turkey a 50km ride through traffic and two tolls cost me way less than the 10-15min drive from the airport to my house which is maybe 15km away.
Can't compare rates of other countries to Ontario. Unless you take into account the cost differences. For example in the GTA just the insurance for a taxi is anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 a year for just simple liability insurance, then add the cost of fuel and maintenance. The cost of a taxi in the GTA is high but that is the result of high costs to operate.Fully agree...cabbies who gouge should be reporter because its not fair to the client.
