Audi buying ducati!! wow

I don't see what's cool about that. The service will be even more epensive than it is now? Would be my guess.

Not sure how the Ducati dealers are with service but with the amount of ripping off I saw going on at the VW/Audi dealerships when I had one, I wouldn't want to be taking my bike there.

Wow, paranoid much?? You won't be having your Ducati serviced at Audi.

They didn't declare bankruptcy, they just have more debt than revenue. My guess is they blew huge loads on the development of the Multistrada, Diavel, and the 1199 in a short span of time. IMO it was a great move for the long term (putting a strong foot down in various markets) but obviously the revenue can't keep up. It doesn't at all mean they have to close their doors, but it sounds like the owners decided to put a wad of cash in their own pockets and sell the company off.

Lambo does not exist without Audi/VW because they lose money on every car. If you opened up the books on Ducati, I am pretty sure they are losing money on every bike they sell.

Uh, duh??? What other possible conclusion can you come to when the company has more debt than revenue?

Meh, no suprise.. Ducati has been sucking rocks finacially for a while now.

Audi and MB have been both been jonesing to own a mc company for a while now.....

they want to be cool like BMW. :)

Good luck!

Not sure what's in your cool aid but for North Amerca Ducati sales were up 43% in 2011 compared to BMW at only 7.4%. Mostly due to the 848. I expect with the Diavel and the 1199 those numbers will improve in 2012/13 also. Looking for a new investor to pay for all the development Ducati has invested in over the last several years it's just ensuring it's future growth its not a reflection of the company being in trouble.

Ok, lets see what the total sales figures are for each company across the board for the past 5 years

And look for an investor to assume the up-to-the-eyeballs debt Ducati is in.

Topendz said it exactly right. Ducati has a fresh lineup of awesome bikes with stellar sales. Their debt, like I said, is largely thanks to development costs for all these new bikes. Its a great buy, no wonder so many companies are foaming their mouths over it.

What are the volumes like?

Perspective.....

Ducati sold about 30,000 total motorcycles worldwide in 2010.

BMW moved, R1200GS series alone, totaling over 38,000 worldwide in the same time.

Total BMW sales, over 100,000 bikes.

It's a good move for Audi, their brand is hot right now.

The question is who is M-B going to the prom dance with, all of the hot looking girls are spoken for.

From an acquisition perspective.. You're buying the brand, not their development efforts. The Ducati name still has pull with a lot of people. Also helps that it matches Audis overpriced sales attitude.
