Art...

Getting a living wage for doing something you enjoy and self assess as world class is silly. Want to buy some of my cousin's macrame?

I don't believe in arts grants but do believe in teaching art appreciation (Plus music, food etc). If people are taught appreciation, the market will adjust and balance out. Unfortunately the entire situation is subjective as are the experts in the trade.
Some friends are skilled and lucky enough that they have managed to make their living through music or theatre. They aren't on the easy ride public money dumpster fire program though. They are in the putting in hours, working their ***** off and touring program.

While I understand the concept of arts grants, far too often they are a steaming pile. For instance the $470K light post in calgary (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calg...rprised-by-reaction-to-installation-1.1991453

Not really art per se but sometimes you can fill space by displaying a collection. Being a gearhead these old gages give me as much pleasure as most paintings I view. Gages.jpg

You seem like the kind of guy that would have a steam whistle as a dinner bell. I've thought about it but they don't sound right on air and I don't feel like maintaining a steam boiler (and insurance would hate me).

I painted "voice of fire" on one of my doors at the old house, didn't get sued. Also painted Spider-man in my eldest's bedroom.
If Yoko Ono can make art, anyone can.

Got bored and did this for my wife’s birthday, in a hurry.

If that’s your work when you’re bored…and in a hurry…I’m impressed!

Very well done!

He does it intentionally. So annoying. Too stubborn, inconsiderate, and self absorbed to make the effort.
I should just delete posts that are missing quotes. But, i have better things to do than deal with childish bs.

I would stay away from the art galleries on cruise ships. One youtuber I watched said he sold millions and millions of dollars worth by an artist named Peter Max. He had the opportunity to go to a cocktail event at his home/studio in NYC and the room that was told to him was his studio was about 12x12, with a locked door on it. In other words he would have to be locked in there 24/7 to pump out the thousands of paintings he was selling. Likely done in a sweatshop somewhere.

A year or two ago a bunch of Youtubers were hocking some art investment company where you buy shares of the company, and the company buys art pieces with the raised capital so you could own a piece of a Picasso. Lol the whole thing sounded like a huge scam to me where they must've raised a few million in a marketing budget to pay these Youtubers to convince others to invest in the company. Sort of like NFT's? Ha.

Edit- Be careful in Asia as well. Lots of little stalls with incredible realistic "paintings" hanging on the wall. They are printed on a canvas with some brush strokes over top of the said image. They look really well done, almost unbelievable. You can walk by the same stall 5 days in a row and there will be a guy there with all his paint in front of him working on the same leg of a horse.

Very nice! You related to this guy? (Friend of a friend, BTW)

We are not into art much.... or at all for that matter.
They only things on our walls are family pictures and some other inexpensive stuff to fill the space. My wife is the decorator of the house so I stay out of it.
We don't have the money to buy the expensive stuff nor would we know the different between fine art and Ikea purchased art.

However.... this may be worth some money in the future.
Too us right now, its priceless.
My 14 yo daughters work she drew up out of boredom today. She is the artsy one in the family. There are other pieces that are just as good.

This oine is getting framed.

I’m too rough on nice things. I can appreciate art in all forms but can’t manage to care for it properly. Music, writing and poetry. Paint, sculpture, wood crafting, cuisine, clothing design, engineering etc. It all amazes me.

A clean garage where I can fiddle with my toys when I can’t enjoy them on the open road is where I appreciate “art” on two wheels or more. Nature’s beauty is also admired when possible.

Foster that talent @oioioi. When my sister was your daughter’s age she loved to draw, sketch and paint. And she was good at it.

Now in her 40s she lost that touch and regrets it very much.

I can’t draw, sketch or do anything artistic (even my guitar), and really regret not trying harder to make something out of it into at the very least a relaxing hobby.

Aside from my excursions to One of a Kind most of which were sold off when I moved to Cairns we are both into space and aircraft prints and lately models.
Stepdotter and Qantas pilot hubby here are Lego collectors...both built and sealed and it appears we've been infected.
We enjoyed doing the Americas Cup winning boat.

Since we sold the spare 50" TV we have a sheltered corner for the new acquisitions.

We have the 1 meter tall Saturn 5, The Space Shuttle Discovery, The Lunar Lander and The Mars Perseverance Lander all to build and occupy that corner. All of those are discontinued so some collectors value.

Every empty wall space is covered in space oriented prints small and large and even mounted jigsaws of the moon. Some of the small ones we like are imagined travel posters of space in the future.

that I bought when I visited NASA with my daughter. Good memories and glad I brought them from Canada. Really like Cape Winds. They are signed and out of print now.

Space geeks? yep

Forgot ...a few Mova globes which spin when the light hits them.

We fell in love with them when we visited The Dish - we have Jupiter and two moons
Very interesting technology

Wow...you just reminded me about those NASA posters! I think they were available for downloading to PDF, and then printing on your own!

Need to check my records as I've downloaded them somewhere. They'll just need nice paper to be printed on.

EDIT: Here they are... Visions of the Future

You can also buy pre-printed ones if you don't want to bother printing yourself.

Where does one get something Chinese appraised? A friend has some nice stuff and it isn't recent.

I would try asking auction houses. If it's really old, call the ROM and get a contact from them. They won't give you a valuation but will know who understands the history. Especially true if the pieces are special enough that they may be interested in a donation to lock in their basement. Tax receipt provided.
